una gonna non per me - a skirt not for me

vi ho già fatto vedere quello che sheri di awesomesauce & asshattery mi ha mandato per il nostro swap. ecco la mia parte per lei. come richiesta, una gonna fatta da due magliette (come queste gonne che avevo già fatto).

i already showed you what sheri from awesomesauce & asshattery sent me for our swap. here's my part for her. as per request, a skirt made from two t-shirts (similar to these other skirts i'd already made).

la prima (e decisamente più interessante) maglietta. (quella a sinistra non c'entra. ho messo la maglietta marrone sbagliata nella foto e poi non riuscivo a tagliarla fuori per come l'ho messa.)

the first (and decided more interesting) shirt. (don't mind the one on the left. i put the wrong brown shirt in for the pictures and couldn't photoshop it out the way i'd put it.)

e la seconda, meno interessante. questa maglietta, veramente era già una refashion perché in origine aveva maniche lunghe, ma un bottoncino a pressione sul polso si era rotto, quindi l'ho trasformata in maniche corte. ora che ci penso, fu la prima volta che feci una refashion. (se non consideri i jeans tagliati come pantaloncini.) perciò le maniche un po' più scure del resto della maglietta, perché sono state lavate molto di meno.

and the second, less interesting. this shirt was actually already a refashion because originally it had long sleeves, but one of the sleeve snaps came off, so i cut off the sleeves. now that i think about it, this was my first refashion ever. (unless you could cut-off jeans.) hence the darker sleeves, because they got washed considerably less often.

vedete? ecco mia figlia nel lontano maggio 2008 all'età di 21 mesi (cavolo, l'età esatta del mio picciotto ora...) e "roberta la bambola" che indossano le maniche a modo loro.

see? here's my little girl in the long past may 2008 at the age of 21 months (wow, the same exact age as my little guy right now...) and "roberta la bambola" (roberta the doll) wearing the sleeves in their own distinctive way.

mentre tagliavo la prima maglietta, ho scoperto questa ascella cucita male. le cuciture non combaciano. e ho avuto il pensiero che spesso le persone mettono il "fatto a mano" sullo stesso piano del "fatto male" ma non è sempre così. perché gli oggetti fatti a mano sono spesso incredibilmente benfatti e oggetti fatti in fabbrica sembrano essere stati fatti da un bimbo di 5 anni. (speriamo che non sia così)

while i was cutting the first shirt, i discovered this armpit which had been sewn badly. look at those mismatching seams. and i thought that a lot of times people equate "handmade" with "crappy-made" but it really isn't that way at all. because frequently handmade items are amazingly well-constructed and factory-made items look like they were made by a 5-year-old. (hopefully they weren't)

non ho fatto le foto la prima volta che l'ho cucita. ho fatto la cintura con l'elastico dentro la stoffa. poi ho tenuto la parte sotto la parte da legare integro e, usando il più possibile la forma avvolgente della parte di sopra, ho unito i pezzi rimasti. poi l'ho riattaccato al resto sempre avvolgendo la stoffa in modo che si sovrappone davanti. solo che... 1. la parte di sopra era troppo lunga e finiva nel punto peggiore per mettere in evidenza le anche larghe e il sedere e 2. la parte di sopra era anche troppo stretta. (e sì, la camera dei bimbi è l'unica con uno specchio grande.)

i didn't take pictures the first time i sewed this. i made a waistband with a wide elastic inside the fabric. then i kept the part under the tie intact and, taking advantage of the wrap shape of the rest, i assembled the rest. then i attached it to the intact part by wrapping it around so it would overlap in the front. except... 1. the top part was too long and ended in the worst place, thereby emphasizing hips and butt and 2. the top part was also too tight. (and yes, the kids' room is the only one with a big mirror.)

quindi l'ho smontata e ho tolto una striscia dalla parte di sopra troppo lunga/stretta.

so i took it apart and cut off a strip from the too long/tight top part.

l'ho tagliato in quatto pezzi uguali, ho aperto la parte di sopra e ho inserito le strisce nuove, tre da una parte e una dall'altra per renderla sempre assimetrica. sul retro ho aggiunto un'altra cucitura per decorazione.

i cut it into four strips, opened up the top part and inserted the new strips, three on one side and one on the other, just to keep it assymetrical. on the back i added another seam just for decoration's sake.

quando ho cominciato a riattaccare la parte di sotto con gli spilli, avvolgendola sempre, mi sono resa conto che, con la parte superiore più larga, si apriva davanti senza sovrapporre i due strati. quindi ho raccolto tutti i pezzetti di stoffa rimasta, ho composto tre strisce più lunghe e le ho aggiunte alla stoffa di sotto. vedete dove finisce il marrone nel bordo di sotto e c'è quella striscia di fantasia? là. solo che quel pezzo di fantasia dove doveva essere marrone mi dava tantissimo fastidio. ma non avevo più tessuto, quindi non ci potevo fare niente.

of course, when i started pinning the bottom part on, wrapping it around, i realized that, with the top part being wider, the bottom part opened up in front without overlapping well. so i gathered all the bits of fabric i had left, made up three long strips and i added them on to the bottom fabric piece. see where the brown edge ends and there's that little strip of patterned fabric? there. but that little strip should've been brown, not patterned and it drove me crazy. but i didn't have any more fabric, so i couldn't do anything about it.

ora MOLTO meglio! ma ancora, che fastidio quel pezzo di fantasia fuori posto!!

disperata, ho cercato un'ultima volta un pezzettino di stoffa marrone e ho scoperto che c'erano due pezzetti che, uniti, potrebbero coprire la fantasia incriminata. sospiro di sollievo... ora sì che andava bene! allora la prova della piroetta...

desperate, i looked once more for a little bit of brown fabric and found two tiny pieces that, sewn together, could cover up the offending patterned fabric. sigh of relief... and now i was happy with it! on with the twirling test...

non potevo inviare il pacco senza un pensierino per la sua piccolina, quindi ho aggiunto anche una lavagna portatile. (ero sicura di aver fatto un post su queste lavagne, ma evidentemente mi ero dimenticata di farlo. oops...)

i couldn't send off the package without a little something for her munchkin, so i added a travel chalkboard. (i was sure i'd posted about these chalkboards, but apparently i forgot. oops...)
