ho già scritto sul mio primo accessorio personalizzato da usare in piscina. ora il secondo. la maggior parte delle donne nello spogliatoio hanno una specie di tappeto di roba sintetica su cui stare in piedi mentre si asciuga e si veste. (edit: alcuni lettori mi hanno chiesto che cosa sono. qui si vedono da decathlon, e ora ho visto che ce ne sono anche con i piedi disegnati sopra, ma giuro che non li avevo mai visto prima così!) non mi andava di comprare una cosa del genere, quindi ho rimediato io facendo dei tappetini simili a questi con i nostri piedi applicati sopra.

i've already written about my first personalized pool accessory. now the second. most women in the locker room have a sort of synthetic mat they stand on as they get dried off and dressed. (edit: some readers asked me what these are. here you can see the ones at decathlon and now i saw that they even have them with feet drawn on them, but i swear that i'd never seen them like that before just now!) i didn't want to buy something like that so i made my own little foot mats similar to these ones with our feet appliquéd on top.

ovviamente ho usato materiali di recupero (che altro?!): asciugamani di mia nonna (che non usavamo per la piccola percentuale di poliestere che non dava la sensazione di asciugare benissimo) e avanzi di uno dei copripiumini dei miei lettini portatili.

i obviously used upcycled materials (what else?!): towels from my grandmother (which we didn't use because the tiny percentage of polyester in them didn't make us feel completely dried off) and scraps from one of the duvet covers i used for my portable pillow beds.

per prima ho tagliato un pezzo di asciugamani e uno di copripiumino della stessa misura per la base. poi ho disegnato i nostri piedi. se volete, potete scaricare la sagoma dei piedi miei and di mia figlia qui.

first i cut two pieces the same size for the base, one from a towel and the other from the duvet cover. then i drew our feet. if you want, you can download the shape of my and my daughter's feet here.

mi piace sempre incollare il foglio con la sagoma sul cartone dei cereali prima di tagliare per dare più stabilità. poi si traccia la sagoma del piede su heat-n-bond lite (o altra velina per fare applicazioni) una volta normalmente, e poi di nuovo girando il cartamodello sotto sopra in modo di ottenere un piede destro e l'altro sinistro. si applica il heat-n-bond al retro di un asciugamani, si tagliano le sagome e si stirano sul pezzo di copripiumino come nelle istruzioni.

i always like to glue the paper with the outline onto cereal boxes before cutting to give more stability to the patterns. then you trace the foot shapes onto heat-n-bond lite (or whatever other product for appliqués) once right side up and then again flipping the pattern wrong side up so as to make both left and right feet. you apply the heat-n-bond to the back of the towels, cut the feet out and iron them onto the duvet cover as per the instructions.

ho fatto un po' la pigra con le altre forme e le ho solo spillate. ho creato dei bordi che si sovrappongono...

i was a little lazier with the other shapes and just pinned them into place. i made overlapping borders...

... e, visto che c'era un po' troppo spazio vuoto rimasto, ho fatto dei cerchi per il mio e dei spirali per mia figlia.

... and, seeing as there was too much empty space left, i made some circles for mine and spirals for my daughter.

poi si cuce con uno zig-zag piuttosto stretto tutto intorno ai bordi delle forme tagliate. le forme attaccate con heat-n-bond lite non si spostano...

then you sew around the edges of the cut shapes with a pretty tight zig-zag stitch. the shapes attached with heat-n-bond lite don't slip around...

...ma quelle senza si possono spostare, quindi bisogna fare con molta attenzione (e molti spilli!).

...but the ones without it can, so you need to be really careful when sewing them (and use a million pins!).

poi si cuciono insieme il davanti e il dietro. ecco il mio tappetino...

then you sew the front and back together. here's my foot mat...

...e quello di mia figlia, a cui, come si vede, piace tantissimo il suo tappetino!

...and my daughter's, who, as you can see, loves her foot mat!

ho avuto un *sacco* di complimenti dalle altre nuotatrici e conversazioni di questo genere:

• lei: che carino, quel tappetino! dove l'hai comprato?
• io: grazie! veramente, l'ho fatto io.
• lei: *tu?!*
• io: (un po' embarazzata) sì... mi piace cucire.
• lei: ma dove hai trovato i piedi?
• io: li ho fatti io. sono i miei piedi.
• lei: (incredula) come hai fatto?!
• io: con dei asciugamani e un pezzi di un copripiumino.
• lei: nooo! ma che idea! quanto sei creativa!

i've gotten a *ton* of compliments from the other swimmers and conversations similar to this:

• her: i love your foot mat! where did you buy it?
• me: thanks! actually, i made it.
• her: *you?!*
• me: (a little embarassed) yeah... i like sewing.
• her: but where did you find those feet?
• me: i made them. they're my feet.
• her: (amazed) how did you do it?!
• me: with some towels and a piace of a duvet cover.
• her: nooo! what a cool idea! you're so creative!

ma non bisogna andare per forza in uno spogliatoio per poter usare un tappetino del genere. si può anche usare come tappetino da bagno davanti al gabinetto per fare divertire i maschi della famiglia!

but you don't have to go regularly into a changing room to be able to use this type of mat. you can also use it as a tongue-in-cheek bath rug in front of the toilet to give the guys in your family a bit of fun!
