vestiti estivi al momento - summer clothes in a momento

 
se mi seguite su facebook, avrete forse visto la settimana scorsa che ashley di make it and love it ha avuto la stessa idea che ho avuto io: utilizzare i leggings troppo corti per la figlia e accorciarli per leggings estivi. e se mi leggete, saprete anche che amo recuperare vestiti inutilizzate e che mi piace fare i progetti molto veloci. quindi, eccovi la prima parte di come preparare i vestiti estivi in un attimo senza spendere un soldo! (gli altri modi saranno per la prossima volta.)

if you follow me on facebook, you might have seen last week when ashley from make it and love it had the same idea that i did: use your daughter's too-short leggings and shorten them to make summer leggings. and if you read this blog, you'll know that i just love recuperating unused clothes and i love super quick projects. so, here's the first part of how to make summer clothes in a flash without spending a cent! (the other ways will be for next time.)

mia figlia aveva usato moltissimo questi due leggings, ma aveva ancora un po' di vita (non tantissimo....). quindi le ho fatto indossare i leggings e ho segnato dove dovevano arrivare con una spilla a balia. confesso che ho fatto una prima prova a fare i lati inferiori "ruched" come avevo visto da made (e come ha fatto anche ashley!) ma evidentemente non avevo il filo elasticizzato giusto. ho usato uno di nylon trasparente, ma sembra che ci vuole il tipo coperto. non l'ho trovato dove abito io, quindi ho comprato questo tipo negli stati uniti e non vedo l'ora di provarlo!

my little girl had really used these leggings a lot, but they still had a little life in them (not a lot....). so i had her put on the leggings and i marked where they should go with a safety pin. i admit that i first tried to make ruched leggings as i'd seen at made (and how ashley did too!), but apprently i didn't have the right kind of  elastic thread. i used one made of clear nylon, but i guess you need that covered type. i couldn't find it where i live, so i bought this type in the states and can't wait to try it out!

quindi, ho fatto un semplice orlo. ho tagliato la parte inferiore delle gambe, le ho piegato verso l'interno e le ho stirate (si ho usato il ferro una volta tanto!).

so i just did a simple hem. i cut off the pants bottoms, folded them inwards and ironed them (yes, i ironed for once!).

con il primo ho fatto un semplice zig zag dall'interno e ho chiuso là. ma non mi piaceva l'effetto troppo "fatto in casa", quindi per il secondo ho usato il doppio ago (che ho imparato qui, sempre da ashley).

i did the first pair with a simple zig zag stitch from the inside and called it a day. but i didn't like the homemade effect it had, so for the second pair i used a double needle (which i learned here, again from ashley).

con questo metodo si deve cucire dall'esterno, quindi ho usato la guida della macchina da cucire (quel affare a destra nella foto sopra) e, con il pantalone all'incontrario, l'ho aggiustato in modo che fosse all'altezza giusta. poi li ho girato nel verso giusto e li ho cuciti.

doing them this way you have to sew from the outside, so i used the sewing machine's guide (that thing on the right in the above photo) and, with the pants inside out, i adjusted it so it would be at the right width. then i turned the leggings the right way out and sewed the hem.

molto più professionale! guardate la differenza dopo aver cucito così prima e dopo aver stirato. (ho stirato di nuovo!)

mi chiedevo come usare il resto della stoffa. pensavo qualche abbellimento, poi mi sono ricordata che mia figlia vuole sempre le tasche, anche se piccole, per portare con sè le sue cosine.

i was wondering how to use the rest of the fabric. i thought of doing some sort of fancy decoration, then i remembered that my daughter always wants pockets, even if they're little, to bring her little do-dads with her.

non credo che questo sia il modo più esperto di fare le taschine, ma le ho fatte così. e questo modo funziona solo con il jersey, che non si sfila durante il lavaggio. con la gamba rimossa alla rovescia, si disegna la forma della tasca che vuoi, usando l'orlo esistente per la parte aperta della tasca. si cuce sulla linea, si taglia intorno, e si gira.

i don't think that this is the most expert way of making this type of pockets, but this is how i made them. and this way only works with jersey, which doesn't fray in the wash. with the removed pant leg inside out, draw on the shape of the pocket, using the pre-existing hem for the open part of the pocket. sew along that line, cut around it and turn it right side out.

ora vuoi girare la tasca alla rovescia e tagliare vicino alla cucitura per togliere quello strato intermedio, ovviamente facendo molta attenzione a non tagliare la stoffa che deve restare.

now turn the pocket inside out and cut close to the stitching to cut away that middle layer, obviously being careful not to cut the fabric that should stay there.

ed ecco fatto! è rimasta un pochino di stoffa ancora, quindi l'ho fatta a strisce e tirate per fare dei cerchi lunghi. ho diviso le strisce in due parti (qui ciascuno di un colore per far vedere meglio) e ho fatto un braccialetto molto veloce.

and there you have it! there was a little fabric left over, so i cut it up into strips and pulled on them to stretch them out. i split them into two parts (here one of each color to help show this better) and i made a quick bracelet.

è un po' grunge perché questi leggings erano cuciti in due parti, ma va bene lo stesso. sono molto contenta; ho recuperato due leggings che mi dispiaceva togliere da mezzo senza buttare resti, ho dato i leggings estivi a mia figlia che ne aveva proprio bisogno, e sono riuscita anche a farne qualcosina anche per me... senza spendere un soldo! olè!

it's a little grunge because these leggings had two side seams, but that's ok. i'm pretty happy; i recuperated two pairs of leggings that i was sorry to get rid of without throwing anything away, i provided my little girl with summer leggings that she really needed, and i was even able to make something small for myself... without spending a cent! olè!

cuscini recuperati di $1000 - $1000 upcycled tie pillow

che cosa si deve fare quando uno ha tante di quelle cravatte che non servono più? be', ce ne sono tantissime di idee sul web, ma la domanda è: che cosa ne ho fatto io?

what should you do when you have bunches of neckties that you don't need anymore? well, there are loads of ideas online, but the real question is: what did i do with them?

fodere per cuscini, ovviamente! non è stata una mia idea, nè una mia scelta farle. quando è nato mio figlio, sono venuti mia madre e suo marito per un mese. mia madre mi ha portato, come sempre, molte cose dagli stati uniti, ma non capivo che ci facevano dentro la sua valigia quella massa di cravatte. mia madre, svuotando la casa di mia nonna, aveva trovato questo articolo in una rivista stravecchia e l'ha fatto vedere a suo marito, che accumulava cravatte. e lui ha deciso che voleva quel cuscino. ed io ero la scelta logica per crearlo. (vedete che mia madre mi dà sempre questi ritagli di riviste e giornali?)

pillow covers, obviously! this actually wasn't my idea, nor was it my decision to do it. when my little guy was born, my mother and her husband came here for a month. my mother brought me, as always, a ton of stuff from the states, but i had no idea what that mass of ties was doing inside her suitcase. my mother, while emptying out my grandmother's house, had found this article in a super old magazine and showed it to her husband, who hoarded ties. and he decided that he wanted that pillow. and i was the logical choice to make it. (you see how my mother always gives me magazine and newspaper clippings?)

mio marito ed io abbiamo deciso di tenere alcune delle cravatte che ci piacevano di più (tipo questa dal museo di arte di boston con origami), o per lui da usare normalmente o per me da usare in qualche progetto di recupero.

my husband and i decided to keep some of the ties we liked the most (like this origami one from the museum of fine arts in boston), either for him to use normally or for me to use in some upcycling project.

altre, invece, che quasi non volevamo toccare (tipo questa super patriottica di poliestere) ho tagliato subito.

others, on the other hand, that we just wanted to get rid of (like this super patriotic polyester one), i cut up right away.

si possono vedere le istruzioni qui, ma ecco un riassunto. si fa un quadrato di stoffa un po' più grande della misura della fodera che serve. e si comincia a posare le cravatte sopra. ho iniziato con tutte le cravatte blu e rosse, pensando di fare un cuscino più sobrio ed uno più vivace. solo che quello sobrio era troppo triste. (qui sotto)

you can see the instructions here, but here's how to do it in a nutshell. you cut a square of fabric a bit bigger than the size of the cover needed. and you start laying the ties on top. i started with all the blue and reddish ties, thinking i'd make one pillow more serious and the other with the more interesting colors. except the serious one was just too sad looking. (see below)

quindi l'ho smontato e ho posato tutte le parti larghe delle cravatte sobrie in una direzione e tutte le parti strette delle cravatte vivaci in un'altra direzione. (qui sotto) molto meglio! quindi ho fatto l'altra federa vice versa (parti strette di sobrie, parti larghe di vivaci).

so i took it apart and laid all the wide parts of the serious ties in one direction and criss crossed them in the other direction with the narrow parts of the more fun ties. (see below) much better! so i made the other cover vice versa (narrow parts of serious ties, wide parts of fun ties).

stando attenta, ho potuto utilizzare le cravatte più volte, usando gli scarti negli angoli. alla fine, di 20 cravatte per i due cuscini di 50 x 50 cm, mi è rimasto solo questo:

by laying them out carefully, i was able to use most ties multiple times by using the extra bits in the corners. in the end, all that was left over from the 20 ties used for two 50 x 50 cm pillows was this:

si spillano le cravatte lungo tutto il bordo della federa (ecco il retro),

pin the ties all along the edges of the fabric (here's the back),

si tagliano i pezzi che ne escono oltre la stoffa, e si cuce tutto il bordo per fermare il tutto. poi si consiglia di cucire una grande X da un angolo all'altro per fermare le cravatte anche in mezzo. sono rimasta male perché è praticamente impossibile nascondere completamente il filo di questa X, ma alla fine non si nota se non la cerchi.

cut the pieces that stick out from the fabric, and sew all along the edge to keep the ties in place. then they advised sewing a big X from one corner to the other to hold the ties in place in the middle, too. i was bummed because it's nearly impossible to completely hide the thread of this X, but in the end you really don't notice it if you're not looking for it.

si prepara un retro per la fodera. ho deciso di cucire la cerniera ben bene per la prima volta in modo che la stoffa nasconde la cerniera. poi si mettono insieme, fronte e retro con gli interni fuori e si cuciono.

prepare the back of the pillow case. i decided to sew the zipper nicely for the first time so that the fabric hides the zipper. then you put the two pieces, front and back, together with wrong sides out and you sew them together.

ed ecco un dettaglio del risultato. ho inserito un cuscino un pochino troppo grande per la fodera, quindi si sono gonfiati troppo, dunque allontanando le cravatte l'una dall'altra. ma con gli inserti giusti (come aveva mia madre), stavano proprio bene. suo marito non smetteva di guardarli. per lui era come riguardare la sua storia, il suo passato. ogni cravatta aveva una storia.

and here's a close up of the finished pillows. i used a pillow form that was slightly too big for the pillow case, so they're a bit too puffy and the ties pull apart slightly from each other. but with the right sized pillow forms (as my mother had), they looked pretty good. her husband couldn't stop looking at them. for him it was like looking through his past. each tie had a story.

ed ecco l'altro. perché li abbiamo battezzato "i cuscini recuperati di $1000"? ognuno è composto da 10 cravatte del valore media di $100. ma è tutto recuperato, anche la stoffa per le fodere (un mio lenzuolo singolo ormai inutilizzato da anni). che bella sensazione recuperare $2000!

and here's the other. why did we call them "$1000 upcycled pillows"? each is made from 10 ties bought for an average of $100 each. but everything is upcycled, even the fabric for the pillowcases (a single bedsheet that i hadn't used for years). how good it feels to recuperate $2000!

sciarpa increspata - ruffly scarf

e avevo detto di voler postare ancora mentre in vacanza... veramente volevo, ma è stato più complicato di quello che avrei immaginato. poi pensavo: subito al rientro. be', neanche quello è andato proprio così. ve lo dico, fare viaggi intercontinentali con due bimbi senza un altro adulto per aiutarti è un massacro. (e ancora di più quando i simpaticoni di air france non ti fanno portare un passeggino negli aeroporti...) comunque, rieccomi!

and i'd said that i wanted to post while on vacation... i really did, but it ended up being more complicated than i'd expected. then i thought: right away when i get back home. well, that didn't quite work out either. i tell you, taking intercontinental trips with two kids and without another adult to help you is exhausting. (and even more when those kind folks at air france don't let you bring your stroller in the airports...) anyway, here i am, back again! (for those of you reading the english: what do you think of this new color? i was told that the previous orange text, for how much it matched my current template, didn't show up well.)

torniamo al dunque. vi ricordate di questo inizio di sciarpa con il filato mondial volant? (con il mio... ehm... "aiutante" allora di 11 mesi) ho trovato questo filato molto più difficile da lavorare del filato farfalla usato nelle altre sciarpe perchè si deve infilare il ferro piuttosto grande dentro i fori piuttosto piccoli. poi i bordi del filato di girano verso l'interno. ho messo parecchio tempo per finirla.

so, back to business. remember this beginning of a scarf i was working on with mondial volant yarn? (with my... um... "helper" then of 11 months) i found this yarn much more complicated to work than the farfalla one used in the other scarves because you have to stick a pretty big needle inside pretty small holes. then the edges of the yarn curve inwards. it took me quite a while to finish it.

ma alla fine l'ho finita al gruppo di knit caffè che ho cominciato a frequentare a napoli. a giugno, mentre la gente mi chiedeva come facevo a lavorare una sciarpa in quel caldo. ma dovevo finirla prima di partire per gli stati uniti perchè era un regalo per mia madre che vedo una volta sola all'anno!

but finish it i did at the knit caffè group that i started going to in naples. in june, with everyone asking me how i could work on a scarf in that heat. but i had to finish it before leaving for the united states because it was a gift for my mother, who i only see once a year!

ed è stata molto contenta, anche per il colore (ne ero sicura quando l'ho scelto!). certo, non è il massimo nel caldo di estate, ma dovevo modellarla quando l'ho finita.

and she was very happy with it, in part because of the color (i was sure she'd like it when i picked it out!). of course, it wasn't fantastic wearing it during summer's heat, but i had to model it when i'd finished it.

forse noterai che, nelle foto di me che modello qualcosa, ho spesso gli occhi abbassati. di solito è perché guardo il piccolo che strepita per essere presa in braccio o che si lamenta o combina qualche disastro. a volte cedo....

you might notice that, in the photos of me modelling something, i'm often looking downwards. usually it's because i'm watching the little guy who's protesting to be picked up or is otherwise complaining or making some disaster. sometimes i give in....

è cresciuto un po' dall'inizio della sciarpa, no? qui aveva quasi 18 mesi e un bel bernoccolo in fronte. ed eccolo un altro giorno (precendente, giudicando dalle maniche lunghe) che mi aiuta con il mio set fotografico. ma che cos'è il fascino di pentole e padelle per i bimbi piccoli?!

he's grown a bit since the start of the scarf, right? here he was almost 18 months and had a nice goose egg on his forehead. and here he is another (earlier, judging from the long sleeves) day, helping me with my photographic set. what is little kids' fascination for pots and pans?!
