come idrare la pelle in modo naturale - natural skin moisturizing

finalmente sono tornata alle mie ricette per prodotti per il corpo! dopo il dentifricio, non ne avevo più scritto in parte perché facevo ancora qualche sperimento ma soprattutto perché ci vuole più fatica a scrivere i post con l'attenzione che ci vuole su questo argomento. dunque, oggi parliamo di come idrare la pelle senza spalmarci sopra sostanze tossiche, cancerogene o derivate dal petrolio. e vai!

i've finally come back to my recipes for homemade body products! after the toothpaste, i hadn't written anymore partially because i was still doing some experimentation, but mostly because it takes more time and energy to write a post like this. so, today let's talk about how to moisturize your skin without slathering it with toxic, carcinogenic or petrolium-based ingredients. yippee!

la cosa più semplice è di usare un olio naturale sulla pelle. ho sentito che qualcuno usa l'olio di cocco, che hai tantissimi benefici, ma io preferisco usare l'olio di mandorle dolci perché è sempre liquido (l'olio di cocco è solido sotto i 25° C, si trova più facilmente dove abito io e costa molto di meno. io lo spalmavo sulla pancia durante la gravidanza per evitare smagliature e lo uso ancora per i miei figli dopo il bagno. dovete vedere come si emozionano quando vedono la bottiglia! metto un po' di olio nelle mani e gli faccio un massaggio sulle gambe, sui piedi, sulle braccia, sulla schiena e sul torso. gli piace un sacco!

the easiest thing to do is rub a natural oil on your skin. i've heard of people using coconut oil, which has tons of benefits for the body, but i prefer using sweet almond oil because it's always liquid (coconut oil becomes solid under 75° F (25° C), it's easier to find where i live and it's costs a whole lot less. i used to rub it on my belly when i was pregnant to avoid stretch marks and i still use it on my kids after their baths. you should just see how excited they get when they see the bottle! i put a bit in my hands and massage it over their legs, feet, arms, back and torso. they just love it! 

ma per me preferisco qualcosa con più consistenza, quindi ho provato tre ricette. non mi fanno impazzire tutti e tre, ma ciascuno ha qualcosa di molto buono, quindi vi faccio vedere tutti.

but for myself i honestly prefer something with a bit more consistency, so i tried three recipes. they don't all thrill me tons, but each one has something really good about it, so i'll show you all three.

inizio con quella che mi ha convinto di meno. si tratta di una crema con due olii e cera d'api. se non capite l'inglese, ecco la traduzione in italiano di google. (questi prodotti puoi trovare in dei negozi naturali, alcune farmacie o online.) era veramente facile da fare, ma non mi fa impazzire perché lascia la pelle un po' unta come se non si assorbisse completamente. ma ho scoperto che funziona molto bene sui piedi, ginocchi e gomiti screpolati. si massaggia la parte del corpo devastata in questione con la crema e poi va ancora meglio se si fa prima di coricarsi per la notte, coprendo i piedi (se l'hai usato lì, ovviamente) con i calzini. avevo i talloni massacrati in inverno ma questa crema li ha messo a posto!

let's start with the one i like the least. it's a cream with two oils and beeswax. (these products can be found in natural stores, some pharmacies or online.) it was easy to make, but i don't love it because it leaves the skin a bit too greasy as if it doesn't absorb completely. but i found that i works wonders on cracked feet, knees and elbows. you massage it into the destroyed body part in question and then, even better, go to bed and put socks on your feet (if you used the cream there, obviously). i had horribly cracked heels and this cream brought them back to life!

poi ho trovato su pinterest delle barrette/formine di crema solida, le quali mi sembrava una grande figata! la prima ricetta di quella pagina non l'ho potuto provare perché in italia non esiste shortening, una specie di grasso vegetale. invece ho provato quella più figa (la versione cadillac, come ha scritto l'autrice). ecco la traduzione sempre di google, e vi consiglio di seguire i link in fondo alla pagina con delle informazioni su alcuni degli ingredienti che si trovano nelle creme corpo industriali.

then on pinterest i found solid body cream bars, which seemed exceptionally cool to me! i couldn't try the first recipe on that page because shortening doesn't exist in italy. instead i tried the fancier one (the cadillac version, as the author calls it). i highly suggest you also follow the links at the bottom of the page and read the information on some of the ingredients in industrial body creams.

che dire, sono veramente una figata! se la passa un attimo in mano e si scoglie abbastanza per idrare le mani e ha una consistenza che mi piace molto: nè troppo dura nè troppo acquosa. solo che si devono tenere da qualche parte. si potrebbero mettere dentro un qualsiasi contenitore, ma io ho deciso per le lattine di altoids (come quelle che ho usato per il kit di acquarelle da viaggio) e quelli che non mi servono subito ho chiuso dentro la carta stagnola. così posso tenere una barretta di crema nella borsa. i contro? 1. non funzionano bene sul resto del corpo e 2. temo che si scoglieranno in estate. (19/06/12: infatti, è vero. nel caldo diventano una pappetta, quindi è meglio tenerle in frigo o usarle solo in temperature più fresche.)

what can i say, but they really are cool! you rub it in your hand until enough melts off to rub in. it has a consistency that i really like a lot; not too hard nor too mushy. however you have to keep them somewhere. you could put them in whatever container, but i decided to use altoids tins (like i used for my travel watercolor kit) and those that i didn't need right away i wrapped up in tin foil. this way i can keep a bar in my bag when i go out. the cons? 1. they don't really work for the whole body and 2. i'm worried they'll melt in the summer. (06/19/12: and i was right. they get all mushy when it's hot, so you might want to keep them in the fridge or just use them in cooler weather.)

l'ultima ricetta è la mia preferita. e una crema corpo vera e proprio che si può spalmare su tutto il corpo e si assorbe benissimo senza lasciare la pelle unta. e si può anche aggiungere dei olii essenziali per profumarla, anche se non l'ho fatto questa volta (volevo provare le ricette senza). l'autrice di questo blog ha trovato la versione originale di questa ricetta qui, ma l'ha trovato troppo densa. io non ho provato la ricetta originale, ma mi piace moltissimo la versione nuova (ed ecco la traduzione in italiano).

the last recipe is my favorite, hands down. it's a real body cream that can be applied all over the body and absorbs perfectly without leaving the skin greasy. and you can also add essential oils for a nice scent, but i didn't do it this time (i wanted to try these recipes without scent). the author of this blog found the original version of this recipe here, but found it too thick. i didn't try the original recipe, but i just love the new version.

questa ricetta ne fa un bel po'. ho fatto solo la metà e ha reso due barattoli. invece della salvia e l'infuso di lavanda, ho usato un tè verde deteinato (il tè vedere sembra che fa bene alla pelle). e, non avendo un frullatore come usa lei, l'ho fatto con il miniprimer. non temete, si lava senza alcun problema (mi ero un poco preoccupata con l'idea di frullare la cera d'api che non si pulisce molto facilemente). è una cosa incredibile... come dice l'autrice, succede una specie di magia con il frullatore. da subito si monta una crema meravigliosa! tengo questa crema in dei barattoli di vetro in camera da letto, ma si potrebbe pure mettere dentro qualche contenitore più piccolo da tenere in borsa. i contro? per questa ricetta, non ne ho trovato neanche uno! un vincitore! (19/06/12: ho cambiato idea: è meglio tenere questa crema in frigo, soprattutto nei mesi caldi. avendo acqua fra gli ingredienti, può andare facilmente a male. ma non è per niente una cosa terribile... spalmare la crema fredda adosso quando fa caldo è davvero piacevole!)

this recipe makes quite a bit. i made a half recipe and it produced two jars. instead of the sage and lavender tea, i used decaf green tea (it seems green tea is good for your skin). and, not having a normal blender, i just used an immersion blender. and not to worry, it washes off no problem (i had worried a bit about blending beeswax, which doesn't wash off very easily). it truly is amazing... just like the author says, it really is like magic. the blender whips up a gorgeous cream right away! i keep this cream in glass jars in the bedroom, but you could also put it in a smaller container to put in your bag. the cons? i didn't find a single one for this recipe! a winner! (06/19/12: i changed my mind: it's best to keep this cream in the fridge, at least during the hottest months of hte year. containing water as it does, it can easily go bad. but this isn't such a bad thing... rubbing cold lotion on your body when it's hot out is really pleasant feeling!)

vorrei solo avvertire chi prova queste ricette: non cercate di scogliere la cera d'api in un barattolo di vetro sulla fiamma diretta della cucina. si rompe il vetro e la cera d'api scolta e risolidificata su tutti fornelli non è molto facile da pulire!! mi raccomando: bagnomaria!!

i would only like to offer a word of advice to those who try these recipes: please do not try to melt beeswax in a glass jar over the burner's direct flame. the glass breaks and melted and re-solidified beeswax is a real pain in the neck to clean off of a stove!! take it from me: put that jar inside a pot of boiling water!!

ora devo lavorare un po' su qualche ricetta crema viso. ne ho già trovato una o due da provare. qualcuno di voi sa di una ricetta casalinga buona per la pelle grassa?

now i need to work on a facial cream. i've already found one or two to try. do any of you have a good homemade recipe for oily/acne-prone skin?

ecco la storia. a metà gennaio, passeggiavamo sulla spiaggia di miseno, vicino a napoli. mentre raccoglievamo le conchigliette, abbiamo trovato questo bel pezzetto di mattonella consumata. sul retro c'era un cerchio e abbiamo deciso che fosse una mappa al tesoro. quindi quando trovavamo qualche cosa a forma di cerchio, guardavamo sotto e scavavamo nella sabbia. non abbiamo trovato alcun tesoro fino a quando non siamo arrivate ad una gomma di macchina buttata per la spiaggia. l'ho alzata. io non ho notato niente, ma mia figlia ha visto una pianta piccolissima e ha deciso di salvarla perché era quella il tesoro. l'ho estratta dalla sabbia con cura per non rovinare la radice molto sottile e, una volta a casa, l'ho piantatao in un vasetto di yogurt e l'ho chiusa dentro una busta di plastica trasparente da fungere come serra. ero sicura che questo esemplare di erbaccia non sarebbe durato a lungo.

here's the story. mid-january, while taking a walk along miseno beach, near naples, and looking for shells, we found this nice piece of worn tile. on the back was a circle and we decided that it was a treasure map. so when we'd find something circle-shaped, we'd take a look under and dig a bit in the sand. but we didn't find any treasure until we found a car tire dumped on the sand. i lifted it up. i didn't notice anything, but my daughter saw a teeny tiny plant and decided to save it because that was the treasure. i extracted it carefully from the sand so as not to damage the fragile roots and at home i planted it in a yogurt cup and closed it inside a transparent plastic bag, which works as a greenhouse. i was sure that this fine example of a weed wouldn't last very long.

e mi sbaglai! ma iniziamo dall'inizio. vi ricordate quando ho usato dei contenitori di latta e un calzino per fare un vaso ricicloso per una pianta grassa? ho scattato la foto all'inizio di quel post all'inizio di giugno e ho notato che, quando ho scritto il post 2 settimane dopo, aveva già cresciuto parecchio. non so se qualche traccia di lievito alimentare rimasta dopo il lavaggio del contenitore ha fatto da concime ma, nonostante il fatto che il vaso è caduto più di una volta dal davanzale e diverse volte abbiamo chiuso le tapparelle della finestra sul vaso e quindi la pianta si è spezzato molte volte, a fine novembre era diventata così:

but i was oh so wrong! but let's start from the beginning. do you remember when i used a can and a sock to make an upcycled pot for a succulent? i took the picture at the beginning of that post at the beginning of june and i even noted that, when i wrote the post 2 weeks later, that it had already grown considerably. i don't know if it's possible that some trace of nutritional yeast left over after washing could have worked as fertilizer or what, but despite the fact that a few times the pot both fell from the window sill and got smushed by the roller shutters a few times and therefore the plant got pieces of it broken off quite a few times, by the end of november it had grown like this:

avevo quindi un vaso libero e la piantina salvata dalla spiaggia da piantare. ma avevo nel frattempo comprato altre due piantine grasse piccole, una per insistenza di mia figlia, e l'altra per una iniziativa degli scout che sono venuti a bussare un giorno. quindi altri due calzini (l'altro calzino a strisce l'ho usato per il sonaglio- mostro per mio figlio):

i therefore had an empty pot and the little plant saved from the beach to pot. but in the meantime i had bought another two mini succulents, one because my daughter insisted and the other from boy scouts who came ringing at my door one day. so another two socks (the other striped socked was used for my son's monster rattle):

and i made another two upcycled pots and the plants all had new homes.

la piantina salvata dalla spiaggia mi sembrava un po' troppo molle e temevo che mia figlia sarebbe rimasta alla fine delusa.

the plant saved from the beach seemed a bit limp and i was afraid that my daughter would end up disappointed.

but after only a week, it had perked right up. (early february)

e prosperava ai primi di aprile! (vi piace l'adesivo sulla finestra? era rimasto dalla mia infanzia. ve l'avevo detto che ho sempre amato i gatti!)
and was quite prospering by early april! (do you like the sticker on the window? it was left over from my childhood. i told you that i've always loved cats!)

e figuratevi, queste foto le ho fatte 2 o 3 settimane fa, e si è fatta ancora più gigante nel frattempo!! dico a voi: questi vasi faranno una specie di magia! comunque, aveva ragione mia figlia: ha trovato un vero tesoro in quella piantina!

and go figure, i took these pictures 2 or 3 weeks ago and it's already gotten more mega in the meantime!! i can only say: these pots must be magic somehow! in any case, my little girl was right: she had really found a treasure in that plant!

non c'entra niente, ma mentre scrivo questo post, sto facendo il bis di questa torta che ho fatto stamattina. e penso di fare un tris. forse cenerò stasera con questa torta... dopotutto, è fatta con il tofu ed è senza zucchero, quindi fa bene, no? provatela... è una cosa magnifica!!

this is totally unrelated, but as i'm writing this post, i'm having a second helping of this pie that i made this morning. and i'm considering a third helping. perhaps i'll have this pie for dinner tonight... after all, it's made from tofu and doesn't have sugar in it, so it's healthy, right? try it... it's amazing!

ho considerato intitolare questo post "anti-ikea" perché è nato dal mio rifiuto di comprare un oggetto di costo bassisimo a mia figlia per testardiggine puro. perchè? perché era una cosa che potevo fare io a modo mio. e l'ho fatto poi a modo mio, impiegando molto più tempo ed energia di quanto ci vorrebbe per compare la cosa da ikea per €4 (o quello che costava, chi si ricorda più?). veramente, questa è la seconda volta che mi succede, ma mi sa che non c'è tempo per scrivere della prima volta oggi. forse la settimana prossima.

i'd considered calling this post "anti-ikea" because it is a result of my refusing to buy a cheap object for my little girl just out of pure stubborness. and why? because it was something i could make myself the way i wanted to. and i did make it my way, putting in way more time and energy than i would've to just buy the dang thing at ikea for €4 (or whatever it cost). actually, this is the second time that this has happened to me, but i don't think there's going to be time for the first time today. maybe next week.

i'd promised my daughter that i'd make her this thing, and then we both forgot about it. and i remembered when i saw topogina's cat-themed linky party. i love cats. i've always loved them. when i was little i begged my mother for a cat "that can meow all by itself" (and i got it). and it seemed absurd that i'd never made anything having to do with cats. and i wanted to participate in the linky dinky. then i remembered the promise: a neck pillow, like the one from ikea, but cat shaped! and i got straight to work.

ma dico io, non sembra la foto all'inizio del post a prima vista un gatto quasi vero- un gatto quasi vero color tè blu- raggomitolato sulla poltroncina poang per bimbi da ikea? opps! ho detto da ikea? sì, sono un po' ipocrita, perché da una parte scrivo dei post che si intitolano "anti-ikea" e dall'altra, riempio la casa con oggetti da ikea. pazienza!

might i say, doesn't that picture at the top of the post look at first glance almost like a real cat- a real teal-colored cat- curled up on the ikea poang armchair for kids? oops! did i say ikea? yes, i'm a bit of a hypocrite, because on one hand i write posts called "anti-ikea" and on the other hand, i fill up our home with ikea products. oh well!

l'unica parte difficile sono stati i tratti del viso. il resto ho fatto in circa 30 minuti, compreso il tempo per fare il cartamodello, il quale potete scaricare per uso personale. non sono gentile? ;) ho usato una maglietta mia ristretta per il tessuto e una maglietta di mia figlia per azzeccare la misura. (stava a scuola e ho rischiato di cucirlo male senza di lei perché il piccolo dormiva miracolosamente nel suo lettino)

the only hard part was the face's features. the rest i did in about 30 minutes, including the time to make the pattern, which you can download here for personal use only. aren't i nice? ;) i used a shrunk turtleneck shirt of mine for the fabric and one of my daughter's t-shirts to measure it. (she was at school and i risked sewing it wrong without her there because the little guy was miraculously napping in his crib)

l'ho disegnato con il gesso, ma ho fatto un po' di confusione con le modifiche, quindi ho preso una penna autocancellante per stoffe e ho ricalcato. solo che...quella penna si è messa ad autocancellarsi subito! chissà se c'è qualche effetto strano quando usato sopra il gesso. quindi vi faccio vedere la forma cucita con cotone nero per evidenziarla meglio. (se usi il cartamodello, devi tagliare le forme e unirle alle letterine. poi si cuce sulla linea.)

i drew the pattern on with tailor's chalk, but i made a mess out of it with all the changes, so i took one of those self-erasing pens for marking fabric and i traced the proper line for stitching. except... that pen erased itself right before my eyes! who knows what bizarre effect happens when used on top of chalk. so i'll show you the shape sewn on with black thread to see it better. (if you use the pattern, you have to cut the shapes and join them at the letters. then you sew along the line.)

quella forma un po' da rombo sulla terza pagina del cartamodello sarebbero le orecchie. si cuciono, si girano e si piega la parte in basso (dove non è disegnato nel file) per renderli un po' 3-D.

that sort of diamond shaped thing on the 3rd page of the pattern would be the ears. you sew them, turn them and fold in the bottom part (where it isn't drawn on the file) to make them a bit more 3-D.

non pensando in avanti, non ho pensato di cucirle a macchina al corpo prima di cucire i due pezzi del corpo, ma sarebbe più intelligente (cioè, semplice). io invece, ho cucito il corpo e poi l'ho tagliato dalla maglietta solo dopo. poi l'ho girato e riempieto di ovatta e l'ho chiuso del tutto a mano. poi ho attaccato le orecchie a mano in modo piuttosto disordinato e anche con cotone del colore sbagliato, quindi un po' bruttino.

not thinking ahead, i didn't think to machine sew them to the body before sewing the body together, but it would've been more intelligent (meaning, easier). instead, i sewed together the body and cut it from the shirt only afterwards. then i turned it and stuffed it. then i rather messily hand sewed on the ears, and also with the wrong-colored thread, so a tad on the ugly side.

poi ho cucito a mano dei pezzetti di stoffa per gli occhi e il naso (suedecloth usato per i miei assorbenti e pannolini lavabili) e ho ricamato il nero degli occhi e i baffi. e per ultimo, l'ho presentato alla clientessa soddisfatta!

then i hand-sewed on the bits of fabric for the eyes and nose (suedecloth used for my cloth menstrual pads and diapers) and i embroidered the black of the eyes and the whiskers. and last of all, i presented it to the satsified client!

ho voluto vedere se questa misura va bene anche per un bimbo più piccolo (va bene, ma è forse un po' piccolo per un adulto). il signorino l'ha tenuto per un millisecondo...

i wanted to see if the size is ok for a younger kid, too (it is ok, but it's perhaps a bit small for an adult). the little guy kept it on for about a millisecond...

...prima di buttarlo via. e non sono riuscita a scattare neanche un'altra foto perché ogni volta, come un lampo, toglieva quel gatto prima che riuscivo a ri-inquadrare.

...before ripping it off. and i wasn't able to take a single other picture because each time, like a lightning flash, he'd toss that cat off before i was able to get the camera back up to my eye.

ed ecco altra testimonianza del nostro amore per ikea: gli scaffali ivar. oh, c'è anche il gatto nuovo con la sorellona macchia. che sembra voler scappare via da quella cosa strana. avrà avuto pure ragione, poverina!

la carissima francesca di il caffè delle mamme mi ha proposto di fare un'intervista come parte della sua rubrica "progetti di mamme" e l'ha pubblicata ieri pomeriggio! andate a dare un'occhiata! sono molto contenta!

the very sweet francesca from il caffè delle mamme proposed me to do an interview for her column "progetti di mamme" (mothers' projects) and published it yeterday afternoon! go take a look! i'm really happy with it! it is in italian, but i will translate it here:

tell us a little about who lisa is, what brought you to italy?

i was born and raised in the united states, in a family with italian origins. at the university i studied italian and did a semester abroad in florence. i wanted to return to live in italy, but i didn't know how. so when i finished my studies, i started teaching english as a second language in boston and, seeing as i liked it, i got an official certification and found work in the italian city which fascinated me the most: naples. then i found love, started a family, and here i am still nearly 11 years later!

i found lots of recycling ideas on your blog, i find knowing how to give new life to the objects that most people would throw away to be the utmost creativity. when was this passion of yours born?

i've always had a passion for crafts and both in organized arts and crafts situations and at home we often created with recuperated materials. perhaps it's more typical in the states. growing up, my love for crafting unfortunately became of much less importance. i did still keep making collages of magazine clippings for mix tapes and make jewelry from beads and painted pasta, but i started becoming interested in other things. for example, for a relatively long period i was very passionate about black and white photography.

then came maternity and everything changed. i couldn't express my creativity through photography because i couldn't breathe in and handle the chemicals while pregnant, so i started fiddling around with sewing (my mother had taught me the absolute basics when i was an adolescent). then when i started becoming interested in the world of cloth products, i started becoming interested in ecological things. 3 or 4 years ago i started questioning the practice of throwing things away without thinking about it first. i've always loved brainteasers, so i really enjoy looking at something that "ought to be" thrown out and thinking of ways to transform it into something useful. reading other blogs about the same topic, i became more and more passionate about it, until now when i have something like a landfill in our home where i keep my treasures that have been saved from the incinerator which i'll be able to use sooner or later! (or my daughter will, as she's become perhaps even more passionate about this than i am!)

when did you start dealing with the world of cloth products?

when i was pregnant the first time, i decided to use cloth diapers. it was a completely independent decision because at the time i didn't know a single person that used them and it was before the era of the blog boom, so it wasn't as easy to find info about them as it is now. unfortunately, at the time we lived in a very damp home without heating and our clothes never dried completely during the period of winter rain, so we decided not to use cloth diapers because they wouldn't have been able to dry properly for a large portion of the year. i was really upset about it, so to make up for it i ordered cloth baby wipes from a wahm (work at home mother) and cloth nursing pads from someone else. then i bought a sewing machine and i started making them myself the way i wanted them.

when my daughter was one, we moved to a much drier apartment, so i decided to sew my own cloth diapers. i studied loads of online tutorials, i ordered the special fabrics when i was in the united states and i made modification after modification. the first ones were pretty ugly and didn't fit properly, but bit by bit i started getting more satisfied with them. then i started noticing american websites and blogs writing every so often about cloth menstrual pads. it seemed like a great idea and i already had the diaper fabrics, so i started again with making different models and modifying them. i still use those first pads even if they're not as pretty and have some stranger forms than the ones i make now do.

the people that saw my diapers couldn't believe that i had sewn them nor that they were so cool-looking and easy to use. and i realized that there was a pretty high demand for cloth products, so i started proposing them to other people.

the return to cloth diapers is surely a step towards a world that is more attentive to the environment and ecology. many italian towns are moving in this direction, with incentives and free kits for newborns. do you think that italian mothers will manage to commit in this sense? 

in a country where most families can afford disposable diapers without having to give up the food on their table, i think most mothers will continue using disposables because of their convenience. lots of peole thing, "cloth diapers? gross!" without learning more about them. but luckily there's an ever larger number of families choosing cloth diapers, thanks also to the initiatives of these more progressive italian towns. i hope that this tendency will continue!

in the united states, is the use of cloth diapers a common practice, or a return to a relatively recent past as in italy?

i think cloth diapers are more common in the states than in italy, but it's certainly not the norm. those who use them are definitely the minority. but, as you said, in any place cloth diapers are "a return to a relatively recent past" if you consider that disposables only started being used in the 1970s and became common practice only in the 1980s. but it's really incredible how people forget how things used to be done when all the disposable products we have now didn't exist. at one time people didn't clean their kitchens with paper towels, nor buy olives in plastic clamshells or bags, nor did they clean their ears with q-tips, but this certainly doesn't mean that they left their kitchens filthy, didn't eat olives and went around with ears full of wax. there have always been other ways of doing things, but nobody wants to think about it.

what would you like to say to the women who read my blog, why should they use cloth menstrual pads?

there are loads of reasons, whether to protect the environment, to keep a distance from the toxic chemicals in disposables, to be more comfortable, to save money or simply to keep your morale up during your period with the bright colors. anyone who wants to learn more about them can read the post on cloth menstrual pads on my blog.

many women think that their menstrual blood is disgusting and don't want anything to do with it. i was like that once, too, in part because of the taboo and in part because i've always had a very, very heavy period. i have lots of bad memories from the time between middle school and university when i couldn't even resist 45 minutes in class without getting my clothes - and sometimes my chair - dirty, teachers who wouldn't let me go to the bathroom twice in one lesson, stains that i could never get out of my clothes...  the menstrual cup (i wrote about it on the cloth pad post mentioned above) along with cloth pads saved me. not only can i go for reasonable amounts of time without turning into a mushy mess, i have a much healthier relationship with my menstrual cycle. i used to hate my period and i was embarrassed to have it or talk about its existence. and go figure, now i'm always talking about menstruation with pleasure! :)

vi ricordate che ho finalmente aperto la pagina cucicucicoo di facebook? per divertirci un po', ho anche iniziato un giochetto in cui pubblico una foto di qualche progetto recente e voi dovete indovinare che cosa sia. ho iniziato con questa immagine. solo phoebe ha indovinato precisamente il materiale, ma nessuno ha capito l'oggetto. è...(rullo di tamburo):

remember that i finally opened up a facebook page for cucicucicoo? to have a bit of fun, i also started a little game in which i publish a photo of one of my recent projects and you have to guess what it is. i started with this photo. only phoebe guessed exactly the material, but nobody figured out what the object is. it's... (drumroll):

una cintura fatta da una camera d'aria! tempo fa ho fatto una borsa da una camera d'aria per mio marito e ha avuto un grandissimo successo, sia con lui che con le persone che la vedono. era un sacco di tempo che volevo fare una cintura così, quindi ho deciso di farne una per il suo compleanno la settimana scorsa. poi qualche mese fa ho comprato una fustellatrice economica per fare questo progetto (che non ho ancora finito), quindi l'ho usato per fare i fori nella camera d'aria.

a belt made from an inner tube! a while back i made my husband a bag from an inner tube and it was (and continues to be) a huge success with him and everyone else who sees it. i'd wanted to make a belt like this since then, so i decided to finally do it for his birthday last week. then a few months ago i bought a cheap leather punch to do this project (which i still haven't finished), so i used that to make the holes in the inner tube.

è stato molto complicato cucire questa cintura perché i diversi strati di camera d'aria erano piuttosto doppi. infatti, se guardi da vicino, si vedono le cuciture non proprio regolari. e la fibbia è un po' sul femminile, ma era l'unica che avevo che era abbastanza grande. devo dire che fa un bel effetto!

it was pretty hard to sew this belt because the layers of inner tube got pretty thick. if you look closely, you can see the stitches aren't particularly uniform. and the buckle is a bit girly, but it was the only one i had that was big enough. i have to say, it looks pretty good anyway!

anche mia figlia gli ha fatto dei regali a mano. ha usato il happy mais (formine fatte con l'amido di mais, quindi ecologiche, che si attaccano l'una con l'altra quando umide) per fare una torta col sorriso, un bicchiere con la cannuccia e una corona da compleanno.

my daughter also handmade some gifts for him. she used happy mais (shapes made from corn starch, therefore ecological, and they stick to each other when you dampen them) to make a cake with a smile, a cup with a stray and a birthday crown.

e insieme a me, ha fatto un progetto che facevo io da piccola con mia madre. si prende una bottiglia o un barattolo di vetro e si attaccano pezzetti di carta velina colorata. ho trovato una ricetta casalinga per la colla famosa ed irreperibile (in italia) mod podge (ho trovato sempre la stessa ricetta anche qui e qui...voglio citare tutti i miei fonti! chi vuole la ricetta in italiano, guardate il mio primo commento sotto.), quindi l'ho fatto e l'abbiamo usato per attaccare la carta alla bottiglietta del liofilizzato per bimbi piccoli (che schifo quei liofilizzati! blarg!). e ho resistito l'impulso di lisciare la carta velina accartocciata.

and with me, she did a project that i did as a little girl with my mother. you take a glass bottle or jar and you stick on little pieces of colored tissue paper. i found a homemade recipe for the famous and unfindable (in italy) glue mod podge (i found the same recipe here and here, too. just want to give all my sources!), so i made that and we used it to stick the tissue paper onto the little bottle of liofilizzato (an absolutely disgusting freeze-dried powdered meat that many italian pediatricians tell parents to give babies just starting to eat solids. yuck!). and i resisted the urge to smooth out that scrunched up tissue paper.

l'abbiamo fatto il vaso molto piccolo perché a mia figlia piace molto raccogliere i fiorellini di campo che trova fuori dalla scuola o dovunque si trova, ma dobbiamo sempre metterli nell'acqua dentro un bicchierino per i liquori. ora invece, abbiamo un vaso apposto! e fa un bel effetto vicino alla luce naturale.

we made the vase pretty small because my daughter loves picking little wildflowers outside her school or really wherever she is, but we also end up having to put them in water in a tiny shot glass. now though, we have a special vase for them! and it looks pretty cool held up to natural light.

e finalmente, dopo averci pensato da tempo, ho creato una pagina facebook per cucicucicoo! mi fa tanto piacere perché non riesco sempre a scrivere un post del blog con il poco tempo disponibile, ma ce la faccio a pubblicare qualche foto o pensiero sui lavori in corso o di condividere le opere di altri che ritengo interessante per gli argomenti che tratto. non sono ancora riuscita a caricare molto (l'ho aperta solo ieri pomeriggio), ma ho iniziato una specie di giochetto sulla pagina. pubblico una foto della mia ultima creazione, ma molto ravvicinata o in qualche altro modo che non è subito evidente di che cosa si tratta. e voi dovete indovinare che cos'è. poi pubblicherò la risposta sia sulla pagina facebook che sul blog. che ne dite? la prima foto del gioco è quella sopra. secondo voi, che cos'è? lasciate un commento qui o sulla pagina facebook!

and finally, after having thought about it for quite a while, i've created a cucicucicoo facebook page! i'm really happy because i can't always write a blog post with the little time i have available, but i can post a photo or thought on the works in progress or share the work of others which i consider interesting for the subjects i write about. i still haven't been able to put much on there (i just opened it yesterday afternoon), but i've started a little game on the page. i post a photo of my latest creation, but an extreme close up or some other way that doesn't make it immediately clear what it is. and you have to guess what it is. then i'll publish the answer on both the facebook page and the blog. what do you say? the first photo of the game is the one above. what do you think it is? leave me a comment either here or on the facebook page!

bit by bit i'm putting myself a little more out there in the world. as i already wrote, there's my etsy shop, where my ecological cloth products are sold, right now mostly cloth pads.

c'è la mia pagina pinterest, dove "pinno" le cose che vedo sulla rete che mi ispirano per un motivo o l'altro. mi piace molto seguire le bacheche pinterest dei miei blogger preferiti perché è un modo per entrare nella loro testa e essere testimone di quello che gli spira e gli spinge a fare quello che fanno.

there's my pinterest page, where i pin the things that i see on the web that inspire me for one reason or another. i really enjoy following my favorite bloggers' pinterest boards because it's a way to get into their heads and witness what inspires and pushes them to do what they do.

e per ultimo (per ora!), mi sono da poco iscritta a paperblog, una raccolta di blog italiani. ogni volta che venga pubblicato un post su un blog iscritto, lo staff lo pubblica nella categoria in cui verrebbe meglio inserito. quindi i miei post saranno soprattutto inseriti nelle categorie "lifestyle (hobby)" e "per lei", ma non solo. un utente quindi può sfogliare tanti articoli di un tema a scelta. è un ottimo modo per trovare informazioni e blog interessanti.

and lastly (for now!), i've just recently become a member of paperblog, a collection of italian blogs. each time a member blog's post is published, the staff republishes it in the most fitting category. so my posts would mostly be inserted in the categories "lifestyle (hobby)" and "women," but not only. a user can browse bunches of articles on whatever topic he/she wants. it's a great way to find interesting content and blogs.

caccia alle uova fai-da-te - DIY easter egg hunt

 

dico sempre che i bimbi bi-culturali sono fortunati perché hanno il bello di due culture, non solo una. a pasqua, i miei figli (va be', fin'ora mia figlia perché il maschietto è ancora troppo piccolo) hanno le uova di cioccolato come si fa in italia e poi la caccia alle uova all'americana. noi negli stati uniti abbiamo delle uova di plastica reutilizzabili che si riempiono di sorpresine prima di nascondere. di solito metto dentro delle caramelle, gli stickers, o cosine piccole che trovo a costo basso ai negozi di 1000 lire. ma questo anno non trovavo niente di interessante in questi negozi. quindi ho deciso di fare a modo mio.

i always say that bi-cultural kids got it good because they get the best of two cultures, not just one. on easter, my kids (well, just my daughter for now because the little guy is still too little) got their italian gargantuan chocolate easter eggs and then their american easter egg hunt. in the states we have reusable plastic eggs which you fill up with little gifts before hiding (they don't exist in italy). i usually stuff them with candies, stickers, or cheap little things i find at the dollar store. but this year i couldn't find anything interesting in these stores. so i decided to do it my own way.

per prima ho fatto la pasta da modellare fatta in casa. (scusate alcune di queste foto, scattate dopo mezzanotte mentre preparavo tutto in fretta e furia per il giorno dopo!) in passato ho sempre fatto la pasta sale semplice (una parte sale, una parte acqua e due parti farina) perché è facile e non si deve cuocere, quindi i bimbi la possono impastare. ho saputo di altre ricette per fare una pasta più liscia, ma non avevo intenzione di usare olio di vaselina (ottenuta dalla raffinazione del petrolio- yuck!). e poi ho trovato la ricetta di claudia della casa nella prateria. è funzionata benissimo! questa ricetta ha fatto un bel po', quindi l'ho diviso in 4 parti e ho aggiunto circa 10 gocce di colori alimentari americani ad ogni parte. poi ho dovuto dividere ogni parte in altri 6 parti per farle entrare nelle uova. è ottima questa pasta e ho intenzione di farla altre mille volte!

first i made homemade play doh. (pardon some of these pictures, which i took after midnight while i was frantically trying to get everything ready for the next day!) in the past i've always made simple salt dough (one part salt, one part water, two parts flour) because it's easy and you don't have to cook it, so the kids can knead it themselves. i've heard of other smoother doughs, but i had no intention of using vaseline oil (petroleum byproduct- yuck!). and then i found claudia's recipe on la casa nella prateria. (mix 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 1/2 cup corn starch, 2 tablespoons cream of tartar, 2 tablespoons oil [i used sunflower seed oil], and 2 cups of water. cook and stir over medium heat for 3-4 minutes. then remove from heat and knead in food coloring.) it worked great! this recipe makes quite a bit, so i split it into 4 parts and added about 10 drops of american food coloring to each part. then i had to split each part into another 6 to get them to fit in the eggs. this dough is fantastic and i intend to made it another thousand times or so!

in passato ho fatti diversi timbri riciclosi qui, qui e qui. nei commenti di questo post nella vecchia parte in inglese (che ora si trova insieme all'italiano anche se i commenti sono rimasti là) una mia amica ha consigliato di usare i polistirolo. non mi convinceva perché temevo che si potrebbe vedere i cerchietti del polistirolo. poi ho visto l'idea di usare i vassoi di polistirolo, che sono più lisci. e poi ho visto i timbri di antonella di la casa degli antuche. quindi ho fatto questi ultimi per gli ovetti. si taglia cerchi dai vassoi di polistirolo un po' più grandi della circonferenza dei tappi di plastica (io li ho tagliati troppo piccoli e a volte scivolano dentro il tappo, tutto storti. quindi falli come ha fatto antonella, non come ho fatto io!) e si taglia il disegno con una penna o matita. una cosa ho imparato: non si deve cercare di fare subito il taglio o si rompe il polistirolo. basta disegnare e poi ricalcare leggermente fin'quando non saranno più profondi i tagli. poi si incollano i cerchi ai tappi. fantastici e riciclosi!

in the past i've made quite a few recycled stamps here, here and here. in the comments of this post in the old english part of my blog (which now you can find with the italian part even if the old comments are still there) a friend of mine suggested using styrofoam. i wasn't sure about it because i imagined the circle texture showing up in the stamped image. then i saw the idea of using styrofoam trays, which are smoother. and then i saw antonella's stamps on la casa degli antuche. so i made this last type for the easter eggs. you cut out circles from the styrofoam tray a bit bigger than the circumference of the plastic bottle caps (i cut mine too small and sometimes they slip inside the cap, all crooked. so do them like antonella did, not like i did!) and you carve out the design with a pen or pencil. one thing i figure out: don't push down on the pen to make the cut right away or the styrofoam breaks. you need to draw on the picture and go over and over it pushing very lightly until the cuts are deeper. then you glue the circles onto the caps. fantastic and recycle-y!

ho messo anche i soliti stickers che avevo già tra le mie cose per insegnare i bambini e alcune caramelle che qualcuno di gentile aveva regalato a sofia, la quale non si ricordava affatto della loro esistenza. (come sono cattiva, regalandole qualche che le era già stata regalata!)  poi ho preparato solo una decina di uova per il piccolo, mettendoci dentro dei biscottini suoi.

i also put in the usual stickers which i already had in my kid teaching stuff and some candies that some nice person had given to sofia, who didn't remember them at all. (aren't i mean, giving her something that had already been given to her!) then i prepared only about 9 or 10 eggs for the little guy, putting inside his animal crackers.

visto che c'era una pioggia torrenziale il giorno di pasqua, abbiamo fatto la caccia dentro la casa di un'amica nostra insieme a sua figlia. ho nascosto le 68 uova in tutta la casa e poi ho messo quelle per il piccolino tutte insieme in un posto molto facile. (e ho raccomandato alle bimbe grandi di non toccarle!) che dire, la caccia e le sorpresine sono state un grande successo!

seeing as it was raining cats and dogs on easter day, we held the hunt inside our friend's apartment with her daughter. i hid 68 eggs all over the apartment and then i put the little guy's eggs all together somewhere really obvious. (and i warned the big girls not to touch them!) what can i say...the hunt and the gifts were a bit hit!

riaperto il negozio cucicucicoo! - the cucicucicoo store has reopened!

 

chi mi conosce già da un po’ forse si ricorderà che nel dicembre 2010 ho chiuso il mio negozio online in occasione della nascita del mio secondo figlio. questo bimbo meraviglioso ma molto impegnativo mi ha creato una vita molto più incasinata di prima e non ho potuto più cucire assorbenti, pannolini, salviette cambio bebè, borse impermeabili, coppette assorbilatte e fazzoletti lavabili.

anyone who's known me for a little while might remember that in december 2010 i closed my online shop for the birth of my second child. this incredible, but very exhausting, boy turned my life upside down and i wasn't able to sew cloth menstrual pads, diapers, baby wipes, wet bags, nursing pads or hankies anymore.

mi mancava molto creare questi prodotti di cui sono così fiera e di avere il contatto con le persone che si interessano a queste idee “alternative”. poi le cose cominciavano a calmarsi un pochino, quindi ho ripreso il blog, cosa che mi ha fatto tantissimo piacere. e finalmente, da poco sono riuscita a riprendere le stoffe e macchina da cucire e mi sono rimessa all’opera.

i really missed making these products that i'm so proud of and being in contact with people who are interested in this sort of "alternative" thinking. then things started calming down a bit, so i first took up the blog again, which made me so happy. and then finally, i recently was able to take up fabric and sewing machine again and get back to work.

e ora sono contenta di dirvi che finalmente ho riaperto il mio negozio cucicucicoo su etsy! fin’ora sono riuscita a preparare solo gli assorbenti lavabili, per cui avevo ricevuto molte richieste. ma continuerò a cucire gli altri prodotti cucicucicoo, più alcune idee nuove che mi frullano nella testa! per ora nel negozio ci sono tanti assorbenti e pochi prodotti rimasti da quando ho chiuso le battenti 15 mesi fa, ma caricherò sempre più cose, bambino permettendo! (vedete quello che succede quando cerco di fotografare? ho tante foto così. forse qualche giorno ne farò un post!)

and now i'm happy to tell you that i've finally reopened my etsy cucicucicoo shop! so far i've only been able to prepare cloth pads, which i'd gotten loads of requests for. but i'll keep on sewing the other cucicucicoo products, plus some other new ideas running around inside my head! for now in the shop there are lots of pads and a few products left over from when i closed doors 15 months ago, but i'll keep on adding new things, little boy permitting! (see what happens when i try to take photos? i have tons of pictures like this. maybe some day i'll do a post with them!)

c’è stato qualche cambiamento. per primo, ho deciso di tornare al mio negozio etsy e chiudere il mio negozio miss hobby. etsy è un portale incredibile del handmade (fatto a mano) di artigiani da tutto il mondo. è molto più professionale e ben fatto di miss hobby, è molto più facile navigare dentro un negozio e non soffre i tanti problemi tecnici di miss hobby. l’unico problema è che il sito è fatto solo in lingua inglese. il mio negozio è completamente bilingue, ma per chi ha bisogno di un aiuto per iscriversi e usare il sito, ci sono indicazioni molto chiare in italiano qui.

there have been a few changes. first of all, i decided to go back to my etsy shop and close my miss hobby shop. etsy is an incredible handmade marketplace with goods made by artisans all over the world. it's much more professional and well-made than miss hobby, it's much easier to navigate within each shop and it doesn't have all the technical issues that miss hobby does. the only problem is that the website itself is only in english. my shop is completely bilingual, but those who need help with registering and using the site, there are very clear instructions in italian here.

per secondo, ho cambiato i nomi di alcuni assorbenti per renderli più “internazionali”. quindi il salvaslip è diventato l’assorbente “MINI” e il “super duper” è diventato “MEGA”. dunque, ora gli assorbenti vanno, in ordine crescente di capacità di assorbenza: mini, regular, ultra, mega. in più, ho deciso di non cucire più i canali laterali negli assorbenti regular, ultra e mega perché nella mia esperienza, il meno il centro dell’assorbente viene compresso, meglio assorbe. e ho cominciato a metterci sopra delle etichette con il nome "cucicucicoo".

secondly, i changed the names of some of my pads to make them more "international." so the pantyliner has become the "MINI" pad and the "super duper" is now "MEGA." therefore the pads now go in increasing order of absorbency: mini, regular, ultra, mega. i've also decided not to sew the lateral sewn channels anymore as i've found that the less the central core is compressed, the better it absorbs. and i've also started adding "cucicucicoo" labels.

terzo, ho deciso di aggiungere una categoria di prodotti scontati. (lo so, questa novità fa piacere a tutti!) si sa che i prodotti fatti a mano sono unici e spesso presentano piccole irregolarità. ma a volte sono un po' troppo irregolari...quindi ho abbassato il prezzo su diversi assorbenti.

third, i decided to add a category of discounted products. (i know, this makes everyone happy!) everyone knows that handmade items are unique and often have small irregularities. but sometimes they're a bit too irregular...so i lowered the price on some pads.

e quarto, ho deciso di usare un corriere privato per le spedizioni in italia. purtroppo le poste italiane hanno aumentato i costi della raccomandata e paccocelere (in italia spedisco SOLO con metodi con tracciabilità) e non ha più tanto senso usarle quando esistono dei corrieri più economici. l’unico problema è che il costo varia o il servizio non è disponibile per certe poche località italiane disagiate, quindi userò i servizi delle poste (tracciabili) per chi dovesse ordinare da quelle zone.

and lastly, i decided to use a private courier for shipping within italy. unfortunately the italian postal system has greatly increased the prices of the shipping methods offering tracking numbers (the ONLY way i will ship in italy) and therefore it doesn't make much sense using them when there are cheaper couriers. the only problem is that the cost sometimes is increased or the service not available to a few difficult-to-reach italian towns, so i will use regular (trackable) post for anyone who orders from those areas.

invece le spedizioni all’estero purtroppo devono essere effettuate con posta prioritaria perché i metodi con tracciabilità fino alla destinazione finale hanno dei costi astronomici. quindi chi sceglie di far spedire un ordine fuori dall’italia lo fa conoscendo il rischio che potesse andare smarrito (anche se non è probabile) e io NON ho la responsabilità di emettere un rimborso. non è una cosa che mi fa piacere, ma purtroppo non ho altra scelta! (o se ce l’ho ma lo ignoro, qualcuno fammelo sapere!!)

as for shipping outside of italy, i unfortunately will have to do that with regular untracked italian post because the rates for methods with tracking up til the final destination are astronomically high. therefore anyone who chooses to have something shipped outside of italy does so knowing the risk that it could get lost (even though it is unlikely) and i do NOT hold the responsability of refunding any such orders. i don't like this situation, but unfortunately i don't have any other choice! (or if i do but don't know it, please someone tell me!)
