scusatemi, non sono tanto presente in rete in questo periodo. ma questo mica vuol dire che non sto facendo niente, anzi! ho avuto tantissime richieste per assorbenti lavabili, quindi sto lavorando prima del previsto per riaprire i miei negozi online. solo che, con il piccolino, ci metto molto, molto più tempo di quello che ci mettevo prima. vi farò sapere quando saranno di nuovo pronti i negozi con gli assorbenti nuovi, sia quelli classici che quelli bio!

sorry, i haven't really been around much online these days. but this doesn't mean that i've been off slacking, not at all! i've had bunches of requests for cloth pads, so i'm hard at work, sooner than i'd planned, to reopen my online shops. it's just that, with the little guy, it takes much, much more time than what it took me before. i'll let you know when the stores are restocked with the new pads, both classic ones and organic ones!

auguri, papà! - happy day, daddy!

confesso che l'anno scorso non sono riuscita a fare neanche un pensierino a mio marito per la festa del papà. il piccolino non me l'ha permesso. (anche se la grande gli ha scritto un libro molto carino che è stato molto apprezzato, ma volevo fargli qualcosa anch'io.) quindi questo anno gli volevo fare una cosa speciale. e ho tratto ispirazione da questo pin. (non metto la foto perché non sono sicura se mi è permessa.) mi è subito piaciuta l'idea ma non ero sicura se un telo da appendere sarebbe piaciuto tanto a mio marito. ma le t-shirt, sì che gli piacciono!

i admit that last year i wasn't able to make even a little token gift for my hubby for father's day. the little guy just didn't want to let me. (even if the big gal wrote him a very cute book which was very much appreciated, but i wanted to make him something, too.) so this year i wanted to make him something special. and i found my inspiration in this pin. (i'm not putting the photo because i'm not totally sure if i'm supposed to.) i immediately liked the idea but i wasn't really sure if my husband would've like something to hang. but t-shirts...they're another story!

quindi ho spolverato la mia freezer paper e ho usato la tecnica di stencil con questa materiale e colori per le stoffe. ho pensato per prima di fare la sagoma di ogni mano in un colore diverso, come nell'originale, ma non ero sicura come farlo venire bene (anche se, ora che ci penso, non sarebbe stato così difficile), quindi ho deciso di riempire ogni mano con un colore diverso e poi cambiare colore a secondo la sovrapposizione. quindi, dove si sovrappongono la mia mano e quella di mio marito è un colore diverso. e un altro ancora dove ci sono quelli di lui e nostra figlia. e un altro ancora quelli dei nostri figli, ecc. meno male che ho parecchi colori diversi di questo tipo! sopra vedi il disegno e lo schema dei colori fatti sulla freezer paper prima di tagliarla. e sotto i diversi fasi: lo stencil attaccato alla maglietta, dopo la seconda mano di pittura, e tolta la freezer paper.

so i dusted off my freezer paper and used the technique of freezer paper stenciling with fabric paint. at first i thought that i'd do the outline of each hand in a different color, like the original, but i wasn't sure if i could get it to come out right (even though, now that i think about it, it wouldn't have been hard at all), so i decided to fill in each hand with a different color and then change color according to the overlapping. so, where my and my hubby's hands overlap there's a different color. and another where his and our daughter's hands overlap. and yet another where our kids' hands do, etc. good thing i have a lot of different colors of this type of paint! above you can see the picture and the color scheme directly on the freezer paper before cutting. and below the different phases: the stencil attached to the shirt, after the second coat of paint, and with the paper removed.

mi sembra quasi un disegno fatto per l'unesco. secondo me sarebbe carino anche fare solo le linee nere delle forme delle mani.

it almost looks like a painting done for the unesco. i think it would be cute even with just the black lines of the hand outlines.

mia figlia, invece, ha deciso di fare un computer per il papà. quindi è andata a frugare nei miei sacconi di roba da riciclare (anche chiamati "zona discarica") e ha trovato una scatola per le scarpe per il lo schermo e la tastiera e un ovetto kinder per il mouse, che ha collegato al computer con un pezzo di lana dalla mia collezione.

my daughter decided to make a computer for her daddy. so she went rummaging through my mega bags of recycling stuff (a.k.a. "the landfill") and found a shoebox for the screen and keyboard and a kinder egg for the mouse, which she connected to the computer with a bit of yarn from my stash. 

papà si è messo subito a lavoro!
daddy immediately got to work on it!

e per il nonno ha fatto una cosa da appendere sul balcone con un ritratto del nonno e dei fili metalici che ha trovato nel orto di amici nostri.

and for her nonno (grandfather) she made something to hang on the balcony with his portrait and some metal wires she found in our friends' garden.

zuppa di porri e patate - leek and potato soup

questo è un po' imbarazzante. quando ero piccola, mia madre coltivava i porri nell'orto di casa e ci costringeva a mangiarli in continuazione quando erano di stagione. (come faceva con ogni cosa che coltivava. sono ancora sfregiata col ricordo di cercare di fare baratto con i miei compagni del 5° elementare nel periodo di dover mangiare gli zucchini 3 volte al giorno. ma nessuno voleva i miei biscotti agli zucchini!) e la cosa che odiavo di più era la zuppa di porri. ma poi, i gusti cambiano e ora mi piacciono tantissimo i porri (e anche gli zucchini, tipo questa ricetta...mmm!).

this is a little embarrassing. when i was little, my mother grew leeks in her garden and she made us eat them constantly when they were in season. (as she did with everything that she grew. i'm still scarred by the memory of trying to trade desserts with my 5th grade classmates during the period of eating zucchini 3 times a day. but nobody wanted my zucchini cookies!) and the thing that i hated most was leek soup. but then, tastes change and now i love leeks (and zucchini, too, like this recipe...yummmm!)

ho deciso di fare una zuppa di porri questo anno. ho visto queste tre ricette (uno, due e tre), ma nessuna dei tre mi ha convinta del 100%. quindi ho fatto a modo mio: molto, molto semplice. per 2-3 porzioni ho tagliato a rondelle sottili 3-4 porri e a cubettini molto piccoli 2-3 patate. li ho girati un po' in una pentola con dell'olio di oliva fin quando i porri si sono un po' ammorbiditi. poi ho aggiunto circa un litro di brodo vegetale caldo (usando il brodo preparato così. ma nei commenti di quel post, roby mi ha consigliato anche di fare il dado casalingo, che farò quando avrò finito il brodo congelato.) e l'ho fatto cuocere più o meno 15 minuti, ovvero abbastanza per far ammorbidire le patate. salare la zuppa con sale, shoyu (salsa di soia) e/o miso. e basta!

i decided to make leek soup this year. i saw these three recipes (one, two, three), but none of them convinced me completely. so i did it my own way: very, very simple. to make 2-3 portions i thinly sliced 3-4 leeks and 2-3 potatoes into very small cubes. i sauteed them a bit in olive oil in a pot until the leeks were a little softened. then i added about one liter of hot vegetable broth (using the broth prepared like this. but in the comments of that post, roby suggested making your own homemade veggie boullion cubes, so i will do that when i'm out of frozen broth.) and i let it cook more or less 15 minutes, enough for the potatoes to be soft. salt the soup to your liking with salt, shoyu (soy sauce) and/or miso. and that's it!

si potrebbe anche metterci delle carote tagliate piccole, mi sa. è buona la zuppa con del formaggio grattuggiato sopra o, in alternativa vegana, il lievito alimentare. o, come facevo per la zuppa di cipolle del ricettario il cucchiao verde, si potrebbe anche mettere la zuppa sopra le fette di pane raffermo (o freselle) in delle ciottole individuali di coccio e grattugiare sopra del emmetal e mettere nel forno abbastanza da far sciogliere il formaggio. mmmm! ho fatto questa ricetta l'altra sera, ma solo scriverci mi fa venire la voglia di farla di nuova!

you could also add some chopped carrots, too, i bet. the soup is good with grated cheese on top or, as a vegan alternative, nutritional yeast. or, as i did with the onion soup from the cookbook il cucchiaio verde, you could also put the soup over hardened bread (or freselle) in individual earthenware bowls and grate emmental (swiss) cheese over it and bake it long enough for the cheese to melt. mmmm! i just made this recipe the other night, but just writing about it makes me want to make it again!

brodo vegetale - vegetable broth

sì, scrivo su brodo vegetale. perché? perchè sono diventata di nuovo vegetariana (urrà!) e non mangio brodo di carne. ma soprattutto perché ci sono un sacco di ricette che richiedono il brodo e non ce l'ho mai. e mi scoccia di usare il dado o quei brodi strani confezionati (sono l'unica che trova quel brodo gelatinoso una cosa spaventosa?). e mi è venuta un idea ridicolosamente semplice, non so perché ci ho messo anni per pensarci.

yep, i'm writing about vegetable broth. why? because i've gone back to being vegetarian (yah!) and i don't eat meat broth. but mostly because there are so many recipes calling for broth and i never have it on hand. and i don't like using boullion cubes or those weird pre-made broths (am i the only one who finds those gelatin-like broths freaky?). and i thought of a ridiculously simple idea, i have no idea why it took me years to think of it.

l'idea mi è venuta preparando il cibo al mio piccolo. usando il metodo di super baby food (di cui ho parlato anche qui), faccio grandi quantità di cibo, lo frullo o faccio a cubetti, e lo congelo in porzioni già fatti. per i cereali uso il metodo "contenitore fantasma", cioè congelo delle porzioni precise dei cereali frullati in dei contenitori di plastica (non barattoli di vetro o contenitori con un'apertura più stretta). quando sono congelate, le tolgo dai contenitori e le metto in una busta di plastica per il congelatore. così prendono meno spazio, posso usare i contenitori e devo solo togliere le porzioni che voglio dal freezer.

i thought of it while preparing my little guy's food. using the super baby food method (which i wrote about here, too), i prepare lots of food at once, pureeing or chopping into cubes, and i freeze it in pre-measured portions. for grains i use the "phantom container" method, so i freeze measured portions of the pureed grains in plastic containers (not glass jars or other containers with a narrower opening). when they're frozen, i take them out of the containers and put them in a freezer bag. that way they take up less space, i can use the containers and i only have to take the portions that i want out of the freezer.

e perché non farlo anche con il brodo vegetale? quindi un giorno ho fatto un bel po' di brodo, ma senza pomodoro, olio e sale. poi l'ho misurato porzioni di 1 o 2 bicchieri (e, perché mi mancavano i contenitori più piccoli, una di quasi un litro) e ho posato i contenitori nel congelatore. il giorno dopo, le ho tolte dai contenitori e messe in delle buste di plastica per congelatore, separandole per grandezza di porzione. così posso prendere solo un bicchiere o di più per le mie ricette quando mi serve. comodissimo! cerco di farvi vedere domani che cosa ho cucinato con la porzione di quasi un litro....

and so why not do it with vegetable broth too? so one day i made a big pot of broth, but without tomato, oil or salt. then i measured out 1 or 2 cup portions (and, because i didn't have enough small containers on hand, one of 3 1/2 cups) and i put the containers in the freezer. the next day, i took them out of the containers and put them in freezer bags, separating them by portion size. that way i can take out just a cup (or more) for my recipes when i need it. so simple! i'll try to show you tomorrow what i cooked with the 3 1/2 cup portion....

inaffidabile ma sincero - unreliable but sincere

quando mamma vintage è stata premiata con il premio "100% affidabile" e si è messa a scegliere altri 5 blogghisti a cui passarlo, si è resa conto che nessuno possedevano tutti i 5 requisiti. quindi l'ha cambiato a modo suo per creare un premio nuovo, "inaffidabile ma sincero", vincendo la coppa del nonno! ma che dire...sei grande! e sono stata fra i 5 inaffidabili fortunati!

when mamma vintage was awared with the "100% reliable" prize and tried to choose another 5 bloggers to pass it on to, she realized that nobody really had all 5 requisites. so she changed it allà mamma vintage to create a new award, "unreliable but sincere," winning the coppa del nonno, "grandfather's cup," a brand of ice cream here in italy. hilarious! and i was one of the 5 lucky unreliable winners!

ora tocca a me scegliere altri 5 blog, ma non ero sicura se dovevano essere "affidabili" o "inaffidabili". ma alla fine mi sembra più simpatico il premio nuovo, quindi con questa criteria: “Dichiaro che i blog seguenti da me scelti NON rispettano le 5 regole del Premio “Il Blog Affidabile”.  Ma li ho messi perché sono comunque una risorsa utile per gli utenti della Rete e meritevoli di essere conosciuti da un pubblico più ampio". ovviamente è assudo pensare di scegliere solo 5 fra i centinaia (migliaia?) di blog meritevoli, quindi premio ai seguenti blog italiani che ho scoperto solo di recente e con cui mi trovo moltissimo:

e due pouf gonfiabili scoppiati in dei punti dove non è possibile ripararli?
and two popped inflatable poufs (do you know what those are? i'd never heard the term used before in english, but it seems to be legit. if you don't know, look at #4 here.)

ora ve lo dico. prima si fa un taglio nella parte gonfiabile del pouf.
just let me tell you. first you make a cut in the inflatable part of the pouf.

poi ci si mettono dentro i tappettini e altri pezzetti di stoffa, facendo cura di schiacciarli bene dietro la parte centrale all'interno del pouf che lo fa ritenere la forma piatta sotto e sopra (abbiamo ancora un altro pouf non scoppiato, ma si è rotta questa parte all'interno ed è diventato una specie di palla).

then you stuff it with the rugs and other fabric scraps, making sure to squash them in nicely behind that central part inside the pouf that keeps the top and bottom flat (we have yet another of these poufs which hasn't popped, but this part inside has ripped or something and it is now a sort of ball).

quando è bello pieno, si chiude con lo scotch per i pacchi e si mette di nuovo dentro la parte esterna. (se la stoffa esterna ha una cerniera non tanto lunga e non si apre quasi completamente, è meglio mettere la parte gonfiabile dentro prima di riempirla, se no, non entrerà più quando riempita!)

when it's nice and full, close it up with packing tape and put it back inside the outer cover. (if your outer fabric cover has a shortish zipper and doesn't open up almost entirely, it's best if you stuff the inflatable part while it's already inside the cover, if not it might not fit back in when stuffed all the way up!)

devo dire la verità: come i cuscini recuperati al 100% (qui e qui), l'imbottitura è pesante. mentre è un po' scocciante per il cuscino, non mi dà assolutamente fastidio per i pouf. anzi, mi fa anche piacere perché i grandi ci si possono sedere sopra senza farmi aspettare lo scoppio e i bimbi non li buttano più destra e sinistra come dei pallone da spiaggia giganti!

i will tell you the truth: as with the 100% upcycled pillows (here and here), this stuffing is heavy. while it's a bit too much so for a pillow, it doesn't bother me at all for these poufs. actually, it quite like it because big people can sit on them without me having to brace myself for the pop and kids can't throw them around here and there like mega beach balls!

tappetini, 2a parte - bathroom rugs, part II

vi ricordate di questi tappettini? li ho fatti da un lenzuolo e asciugamani vecchi. avevo detto che, anche lasciando i bordi così, senza fare lo zigzag sopra, non si sono sfilati. be', insomma...diciamo che mi ero sbagliata. forse li avevo lavato con un ciclo delicato e perciò non si sono sfilati. ma con un ciclo di lavatrice normale (quello che ci vuole, secondo me, per la zozzeria che ci si accumula sopra), i bordi si sfilano. per fortuna, si tagliano pure.

remember these bath rugs? i made them from an old sheet and old towels. i said that, even leaving the edges unfinished, without zigzagging them, they didn't fray. well, um...let's just say that that wasn't really true. perhaps i'd washed them with a gentle cycle and therefore they didn't fray. but with a regular washing cycle (which they need, in my opinion, to get rid of all the nastiness that builds up on them), the edges fray. luckily, they can be cut off too.

avevo ancora dei pezzetti e striscioline di asciugamani rimasti e ancora stoffa da quel lenzuolo strappato, quindi ne ho fatti altri due. ma questa volta cucendo con lo zigzag, non il punto normale.

i still had some odds and ends of towel pieces left over and still more fabric from the ripped sheet, so i made another two of these babies. but this time sewing them on with a zig zag, not straight stitch.

ho usato ogni pezzo rimasto, quindi zero rifiuti, urrà! se volevo farlo per bene, avrei usato la velina termoadesiva per applicazioni (come ho fatto qui, qui e qui), ma non l'ho fatto e si vede che alcune forme si sono un po' spostate e quindi non sono triangoli perfetti (come curvano le punte!!), nè fanno insieme in coppia la forma rettangolare come avevo previsto nel tappettino qui sotto. ma non fa niente.

i used every single piece left over, so no waste at all, yah! if i'd wanted to do it properly, i would have used fusible interfacing (as i did here, here and here), but i didn't and you can see that some of the shapes moved around, so the triangles aren't perfect (just look how the tips curve!!) and they don't make rectangles when paired as i'd planned in the rug pictured below. oh well.

i just want to write a quick message to other bloggers using blogger. i don't know what they changed, but now you can only subscribe to comments left on a post if the author chooses embedded comments in his/her blog's settings. i personally don't like the embedded format, but seeing as i very much appreciate reading other people's comments after mine when i read a post, i figure i'm not the only one. so, if you use blogger, you might consider choosing this option until blogger decides to put things the way they were before! enjoy the rest of your weekend!
