come cucire gli angoli sulle lenzuola - how to sew corners on a bed sheet

siamo stati molto fortunati perché siamo pieni di lenzuola di ottima qualità che erano usate pochissimo dalla famiglia di mio marito. la cosa fastidiosa? nessuna di quelle lenzuola aveva gli angoli. non sopporto piegare i bordi delle lenzuola sotto il materasso. finisco sempre per tirare troppo da un lato, poi dall’altro quando vado dall’altra parte del letto per sistemarlo meglio. avanti, dietro, avanti, dietro.

we were quite lucky because we’re full of bed sheets that were barely used by my husband’s family. the annoying thing? they’re all flat sheets, and not one fitted one. i really can’t stand having to fold the edges of a flat sheet under the mattress when i’m making the bed. i always end up pulling too much on one side, then when i go to the other side of the bed to fix it, i pull it too much on that side. back and forth, back and forth.

 
finalmente ho detto: mo’ basta! li faccio io ‘sti angoli!! non si tratta di una cosa complicata, ma pensavo di fare un tutorial lo stesso. si può usare anche la stessa tecnica se vuoi fare le lenzuola con gli angoli da stoffa nuova.

so finally i said: enough of this! i’ll made the danged corners! it’s nothing all that complicated, but i figured i’d make a tutorial anyway. you can use the same technique even if you’re using new fabric yardage.

1. metti il lenzuolo sotto sopra all’angolo del letto in modo che i bordi sui due lati arriva qualche centimetro sotto il materasso. metti gli spilli lungo il bordo dell’angolo, facendo un triangolo di stoffa che ne esce.

1. put the sheet upside-down on one of the bed’s corners so that the two sides go at least a few cm under the mattress. pin along the corner, making an extra triangle that sticks out.

 

 

2. cuci dove ci sono gli spilli. tagli il resto del triangolo doppio di stoffa rimasto, lasciando abbastanza per piegare sotto per un orlo (mica vorremmo che si sfilaccia tutto!) o passa il bordo nella macchina taglia cuci, come ho fatto io.

2. straight stitch along where the pins are. cut the rest of the triangle off, leaving enough to hem the edges (you certainly don’t want those fraying, now, do you?). or pass it through a serger, as i did.

 
3. fa lo stesso con gli altri angoli. se stai addattando un lenzuolo semplice, sicuramente dovrai tagliare un po’ di stoffa da due lati, se no sarà troppo grande. quindi mentre prepari per mettere gli spilli nel secondo angolo, controlla se c’è bisogno di tagliare quel bordo. ricorda di lasciarlo abbastanza lungo per arrivare appena sotto il materasso più un paio di centimetri per fare l’orlo. è meglio sistemare i lati del lenzuolo prima di spillare e cucire gli angoli.

3. do the same thing with the other corners. if you are adapting a flat sheet, you will probably have to cut a bit of fabric off of two edges, or else it’ll be too wide and long. so, while you’re placing the sheet for the second corner, check to see if you’ll need to trim the edge of the sheet. remember to leave enough to get just under the mattress plus another couple of cm to hem. it’s better if you hem the edges before pinning and sewing the corners.

4. quando hai finito di cucire tutti i bordi e angoli, si procede all’elastico. misura circa 17 cm a destra e a sinistra della cucitura di ogni angolo nella parte interna. io ho usato questa penna delibile veramente meravigliosa. fa un segno facile da vedere e basta passare un pochino di acqua sopra e sparisce.

4. when you’re done sewing all the edges and corners, it’s time for the elastic. measure about 17 cm to both sides (on the inside of the sheet) of the corner stitching. i used one of those pens whose marks can be washed away with water. i just finally bought one and it’s so amazing. you just wipe a little water over it and the color goes right away. 

 

5. metti l’elastico di 5 mm al segno e piega la stoffa sopra.

5. put a 5 mm elastic where the first marking is and fold the fabric over it.

6. comincia a cucire, andando avanti e dietro diverse volte per fissare l’elastico per bene. poi piega la stoffa lungo l’elastico, tirandola circa 1 cm, e cuci quasi fino al secondo segno. sta attento di non cucire sopra l’elastico. vorrai fare un canale con l’elastico all’interno.

6. start sewing, going back and forth over the elastic to make sure it’s sewn down tightly. then pull the fabric a bit further over the elastic (about 1 cm is good) and sew parallel to the elastic, making a channel for it. go til you’re almost at the second marking.

7. quando manca circa 1,5 cm dal secondo segno, alza il piedino e tira l’elastico. controlla che non l’hai tirato troppo. quando tiri la stoffa, vorrai che sia ancora possibile farla espandere completamente per poter andare intorno all’angolo.

7. when you’re about 1.5 cm from the second marking, raise the foot of your sewing machine and pull the elastic. make sure you haven’t pulled it too much. you’ll want to be able to stretch out the corner to it’s regular length so it can fit over the mattress corner.

8. quando sei sicuro di aver tirato bene l’elastico, tienilo fermo con il dito,  piega sopra il tessuto e cuci sopra l’elastico, avanti e dietro per fissarlo. taglia l’elastico che spunta fuori.

8. when you’re sure the elastic is pulled properly, keep it in place with your finger, pull the fabric over it and sew over the elastic, again going back and forth a few times. cut the elastic that’s left sticking out.

9. fa così con gli altri tre angoli, ed e fatto! quanto è facile ora fare il letto!

9. do this with the other three corners, and you’ve got yourself a nice fitted sheet!

benificienza: donare assorbenti mestruali - charity: donate menstrual pads

come molti di voi già sanno, io cucio e vendo i miei assorbenti mestruali lavabili. cloth pad shop, uno dei portali online dove ho un negozio,* ha una iniziativa meravigliosa, cioè la donazione di assorbenti lavabili a ragazze e donne in paesi in via di sviluppo. senza libero accesso a questo tipo di prodotto, donne di queste zone sono costrette ad usare la corteccia o le foglie di alberi o giornali per assorbire il sangue mestruale o addirittura inseriscono l’argilla nella vagina per bloccare il flusso di sangue. non c’è bisogno di dire che queste materiali non solo non sono sufficienti a gestire le mestruazioni, ma causano molto spesso infezioni. per non parlare del fatto che spesso diventa difficile che possano frequentare la scuola o lavorare per diversi giorni ogni mese e può diventare una esperienza umiliante.

as many of you know, i sew and sell my own models of cloth menstrual pads. cloth pad shop, one of the online portals where i have a store,* has a wonderful initiative going, which is the donation of cloth menstrual pads to girls and women in developing countries. without any access to such products, women in these areas are forced to use tree bark and leaves and newspaper to soak up their menstrual blood, or even insert clay into their vaginas to deal with their periods. needless to say, these materials are neither efficient nor healthy and it’s very common to get infections from such practices, not to mention the fact that it often makes it impossible for them to attend school or work and can become a humiliating experience.

questo è il motivo per cui cloth pad shop ha deciso di aiutare nel modo che conosciamo meglio: cucire e donare assorbenti. i venditori che partecipano in questa iniziativa preparano assorbenti singoli o in kit e li mettono “in vendita” con un prezzo ridotto per coprire un minimo dei costi dei tessuti, il lavoro e/o la spedizione degli oggetti. i clienti scelgono quali oggetti vorrebbero donare e li comprono tramite cloth pad shop. gli assorbenti poi vengono spediti direttamente dal venditore alla organizzazione di benificienza scelta. i clienti che pagano questi oggetti in donazione NON ricevono niente, a parte la conoscenza che hanno aiutato almeno una donna in bisogno di un modo igienico di gestire le mestruazioni, quindi aiutandola ad evitare malattie e assense dalla scuola o il lavoro. è una sensazione meravigliosa!

this is the reason why cloth pad shop has decided to help in the way we pad-makers know best: sewing up and donating pads. the sellers participating in the initiative prepare individual or sets of pads and put them up “for sale” with a reduced price to cover a minimum of the costs of making and/or shipping them. clients choose which items they would like to donate and purchase them through cloth pad shop. the pads will then be mailed directly to the chosen charitable organization by the seller. the customers who pay for these donation items do NOT receive anything, besides the knowledge that they have helped at least one woman in need of a hygienic way of managing her menstrual period, thereby helping her avoid illness and absense from school or work. and that’s a great feeling!

there are four main organizations which provide menstrual pads to women in need that we are aware of:

sister hope: lo scopo di questo non-profit è di istruire, dare forza e unire donne che, in tutto il mondo, sono legate e quindi sorelle (in inglese, “sister,” come il nome della organizzazione). si interessano principalmente sulle difficoltà che incontrano le ragazze e donne in paesi in via di sviluppo con i loro cicli mestruali. distribuiscono kit mestruali in africa e america del sud con lo scopo di tenere il maggior numero di ragazze e donne a scuola e/o lavoro evitando anche le malattie.

sister hope: this non-profit organization’s mission is to educate, empower and unite women, who, throughout the world, are connected and therefore sisters. they focus specifically on difficulties girls and women in developing countries encounter with their menstrual cycle. they distribute menstrual kits in africa and south america with the goal of keeping as many females in school and/or work while keeping diseases at bay.

the shanti uganda society: in sanskrit, shanti vuol dire “pace.” shanti uganda è una organizzazione che fornisce la formazione di adulti, molti delle quali sono sieropositivi, di creare oggetti artigianali o aiuto economico per la loro istruzione. forniscono anche servizi medicali, soprattutto per donne incinte, e lezioni di yoga. è possibile dare sostegno le iniziativi di questo gruppo facendo donazioni singolo o mensili, sponsorizzando una ostetrica, comprando gli oggetti prodotti dalle persone locali formati dal programma, comprando proviste da un elenco lungo. una delle cose su quel elenco? assorbenti mestruali lavabili.

the shanti uganda society: in sanskrit, shanti means “peace.” shanti uganda is an organization which trains adults, many of whom are HIV+, to create handmade items or provide tuition for their education. they also provide medical services, especially for pregnant women, and yoga lessons for personal empowerment. it is possible to support this group’s initiatives by making a single or monthly donations, sponsoring a midwife, buying products produced by the local people trained through the program, buying medical supplies or sending in supplies from a long list that the organizers need. one of the things on that list? cloth menstrual pad

pads for prisons: questa organizzazione canadese fornisce assorbenti a prigionieri femminili nel sudan e in afghanistan che non hanno libero accesso a assistenza sanitaria. insegnano ai prigionieri di cucire assorbenti e raccolgono donazioni di vestiti intimi per loro.

pads for prisons: this canadian organization provides cloth pads to female prisoners in southern sudan and afghanistan who don’t have access to health care or sanitary facilities. they also work on teaching female inmates to sew cloth pads for themselves and others and collect donations of intimate wear for inmates.

huru international: in swahili, huru vuol dire “libertà.” huru international ho lo scopo principale di dare la libertà a ragazze in kenya fornendo kit mestruali e informazioni sulla prevenzione di HIV/AIDS, oltre a favorire lo sviluppo di lavoro locale. huru preferisce donazioni monetari, ma accettano anche la donazione diretta di assorbenti mestruali.

huru international: in swahili, huru means “freedom.” huru international focuses on giving girls in kenya freedom by providing both menstrual kits and information on HIV/AIDS prevention, as well as encouraging local job development. huru prefers monetary donations, but will also accept the donation of cloth pads.

• visitate il mio negozio a cloth pad shop* e ordina uno dei miei oggetti donazione. o guardate gli oggetti per benificienza nei negozi degli altri venditori nelle tre zona di cloth pad shop(europe, usa/canada, australia).
• contattatemi (o qualunque altro produttore di assorbenti lavabili che partecipa in questa iniziativa che ti abita più vicino) a cucicucicoo@gmail.com se hai un po’ di tessuti che vorresti donare alla causa, anche pezzi piccoli (non c’è bisogno di pezzi grandi per fare assorbenti!). in questo modo posso permettermi di fare arrivare più assorbenti alle donne di cui hanno bisogno. (ricordate che non ho profitti da questa iniziativa!) ho bisogno in particolar modo di cotone, flanella di cotone, spugna di cotone, qualunque tipo di fibre naturali (canapa, bambù, soia, ecc) e PUL (cotone o poliestere laminato). ricordate che non sono necessari i tessuti nuovi. anche asciugamani vecchi, camicie di flanella or pantaloni dei pigiama vecchi o copritavolo e copri piumini che non vi servono più forniscono tantissimi tessuti, anche se macchiati.
• va al sito internet di uno (o tutti!) di queste organizzazioni per sapere esattamente di che cosa hanno bisogno e di capire che cosa riusciresti a fare. 

• visit my cloth pad shop store* and order one of my donation items. or check out any of the other sellers’ charity items in any of the three sections of cloth pad shop (europe, usa/canada, australia).
• contact me (or any other cloth pad makers participating in this initiative who live closer to you) at cucicucicoo@gmail.com if you have ANY cloth fabric that you would like to donate to the cause, even smallish pieces (pads don’t necessarily need large pieces of fabric!). this way we can afford to get more pads out there to the women who need them. (remember, we’re not making profit off of this initiative!) in particular we need cotton, cotton flannel, terry cloth, any sort of natural fibers (hemp, bamboo, soy, etc) and PUL (laminated cotton or polyester). remember, we don’t need only brand new fabric. old towels, used flannel shirts or pajama pants or tablecloths and duvet covers you don’t need anymore provide lots of fabric, even if stained.
• go to the website of one (or all!) of these organizations to see what exactly they need help with and what you would be best suited to do.

cucicucicoo va a roma! - cucicucicoo goes to rome!

questo fine settimana partecipo ad una manifestazione nazionale di genuino clandestino a roma. gruppi di contadini e artigiani da tutta l’italia si riuniscono per denunciare le norme che favoriscono le grandi industrie e rendono impossibile campare i piccoli agricoltori e produttori. sabato, dopo il mercato terraTERRA, ci sarà una assemblea nazionale dei produttori e dei consumatori, ore 16,30, c.s.a. la torre, via bertero 13, roma, e una cena sociale.

this weekend i’ll be participating in a national demonstration of “genuino clandestino” in rome. groups of farmers and artisans from all over italy will get together to renounce the laws favoring large industries and making it impossible for small producers to get by. saturday, after the terraTERRA market, there will be a national assembly of producers and consumers, 4:30 pm, c.s.a. la torre, via bertero 13, rome, and a dinner following.  

la domenica 18 aprile, invece, dalle 10 alle 17 ci sarà un altro mercato terraTERRA con ospiti di mercatini di tutta l’italia, inclusa la mia ragnatela, con i suoi contadini e produttori di cibi biologici autocertificati e artigiani campani. e chiaramente, ci sarò anch’io (solo alla assemblea di sabato e il mercatino di domenica, non il mercatino di sabato) con il mio banco di assorbenti e pannolini lavabili e le altre mie alternative all’usa e getta. oltre al mercatino, ci saranno anche laboratori, musica, incontri e animazione.

sunday april 18, on the other hand, from 10 am to 5 pm there will be another terraTERRA market with guests from markets from all over the country, including my own ragnatela, with its farmers and producers of self-certified organic foods and artisans from the region of campania. and obviously, i will be there too (but only during the assembly saturday and the market sunday, not the market on saturday) with my stand of cloth menstrual pads and diapers, as well as my other alternatives to disposable products. besides the market, there will also be workshops, music, meetings and other fun.

ringrazio tanto mamma c a nati per dilinquere per questo bel premio! non sono sicura se dovrebbe essere un premio solo per chi fa scrapbooking, ma lo accetto lo stesso perché mi occupo di un altro tipo di scrap, cioè gli scrap di tessuti, che sarebbero tutti i pezzetti rimasti, che cerco sempre di riutilizzare e non solo buttare.

avevo visto in giro questo premio e mi aveva colpito perché mi ricorda un immagine che mi è sempre piaciuta, “we can do it!” che data dalla seconda guerra mondiale negli stati uniti. anche se non è leimolti la chiamano rosie the riveter, figura femminile che si occupava dei ruoli in quella epoca esclusivamente maschili durante l’assenza dei soldati statunitensi. è stato un momento che faceva capire a molte donne che il loro mondo non doveva per forza essere solo il dominio della casa, ma che erano capace di tante altre cose fuori casa.

i’d seen this award around and it always struck me for its resemblance to an illustration that i’ve always liked, “we can do it!” dating from the second world war in the united states. even if it isn’t really her, many people call this woman rosie the riveter, the figure of the female who took over the traditionally male jobs during american soldiers’ absense. it was a time that led many women to realize that their world didn’t have to be restricted to household things, but that they were capable of many other things outside the home.

nonostante io sia contentissima di questo onore, faccio un po’ la pigra con la scusa che ho nominato 10 altri blogghisti solo 10 giorni fa. e poi oggi è il 50° compleanno di mio caro marito e quindi ho altre cose da sbrigare! quindi lo rigiro a tutti che leggono, che lo meritate tutti quanti. :)
le regole di questo premio dicono che bisogna scrivere onestamente 10 cose di noi che non avremmo scritto altrimenti. non so se riesco a pensare in 10 cose “segrete,” ma proviamo!!

anyway, even though i’m quite happy to be honored with this award, i’m going to be a little lazy with the excuse that i nominated 10 other bloggers just 10 days ago. and then today is my darling husband’s 50th birthday so i really should be spending my time doing stuff for him! so i’m just going to take the easy way out and award it to anyone who’s reading this. :)

the rules of this award are that the recipients must write 10 things that they wouldn’t have written about themselves otherwise. honestly! i’m not sure if i can think of 10 “secret” things, but i’ll give it my best shot!

altri stencil - more freezer paper stencils

ve l’avevo detto che questa tecnica crea dipendenze!! qualche settimana fa ho fatto un tutorial su fare stencil su magliette con freezer paper con questa avvertenza. e infatti, che cosa ho fatto? ho approfittato dei prezzi buoni sul kiabi (che bella scoperta, questa, una specie di old navy europea!) e ho comprato diverse magliette di colori diversi sia per mia figlia che per me con l’intenzione di decorarle alla me con questa tecnica. mi sono divertita un sacco!

i told you it was addictive!! a few weeks ago i wrote a tutorial on doing freezer paper stencils on t-shirts with this warning. and you know what i did? i discovered kiabi (a sort of european old navy), took advantage of the good prices and bought a bunch of colored t-shirts for my daughter and me with the intention of decorating them with this technique. and i had a ball!

posso chiedervi il vostro parere? volevo fare qualcosa con le letterine del gioco scarabeo. guardando un po’ su internet, ho trovato diverse volte foto di questo stencil sulla facciata di un palazzo che mi ha fatto schiattare dalle risate (è un modo di dire un poco ironico in inglese che vorrebbe dire “ti ho fatto guardare!”, ma suona molto più buffo in inglese). ho ingrandito l’immagine e ho pure disegnato il tutto. stavo per tagliare la freezer paper quando mi sono resa conto… ma questa immagine su una maglietta sarebbe sul mio seno. mica vorrei dire che ho fatto guardare il seno perché sono una fighissima con un seno stripitosa, che è assolutamente non il caso! ma anche se lo fosse, mica vorrei dire così. comunque, non è che voglio attrare l’attenzione più di tanto al mio fisico. hmmm…mi sa che devo pensare in qualcos’altra per le letterine di scarabeo. idee?

can i ask your opinion on something? i wanted to do another t-shirt stencil using scrabble tiles. looking around online, i found different photos of this stencil on the facade of a building which just cracked me up. i enlarged the image and traced it out (fixing the incorrect values for each letter) and was about to start cutting it out when i realized… if i put this picture on a t-shirt, it would be right over my boobs, obviously. but it’s not like i want to say that i made people look at my boobs because i’m super sexy with a fab bod or something, because anyone who’s ever seen me knows that’s absolutely not the case! and even if it were, it’s not like i would go around bragging about it. i certainly don’t want to go around asking people to check out my body. hmmm…i have a feeling i just need to get over this phrase and figure out something else to write with scrabble letters. ideas?

da tappettini a bachecha - from puzzle mats to corkboards

la settimana scorsa ho fatto dei timbri dalle lettere di uno di quei piccoli puzzle di gomma crepla e mi sono posta il problema di cosa fare dalle parti esterni dei pezzi rimasti. ho avuto qualche proposta dai miei cari lettori, ma alla fine ho fatto una piccola bachecha per mia figlia, rigorosamente da materiali riciclati, ovviamente!

last week i made stamps from the letters from one of those little foam letter puzzles and i wondered how to use up the remaining foam pieces. i got some good ideas from my readers, but in the end i made a little “cork” board for my daughter, completely from upcycled materials, obviously!

 ho messo le lettere in posizione (con la parola “love” al centro, anche se non so quanto si nota). poi ho tagliato un supporto per il retro da un cartone per i cereali di colazione. (a me piace moltissimo usare questi cartoni per tante cose!) e ci ho incollato sopra un foglio di carta colorata nera. spalmato un po’ di colla sul retro dei pezzi di puzzle tutti insieme e li ho attacati alla superficie nera. ho messo sopra alcuni libri per farli stare piatti mentre si asciugava.

i put the pieces together (spelling the word “love” in the center, even though i don’t know how much anyone really notices it). then i cut out a backing from a cereal box (i just love using cereal boxes for so many things!) and i glued a piece of black construction paper on top. i spread some glue on the backs of the puzzle pieces and placed them (all in one piece) on the black surface. i put some books on top to keep it flat while it dried.

per il gancio, invece, ho piegato uno di quei lacci per chiudere le buste alimentari o per tenere i cavi insieme. attaccato con un po’ di scotch nero…

for the hook i bent a twist tie and attached it with some black electrical tape…

è sempre un piacere ricevere un premio! questo l’ho ricevuto da yummymummy, bravissima mamma-downshifter che ha scoperto il piacere di lasciare la carriera ed abbracciare una vita più semplice.

allora, le prime 10 cose che mi vengono in mente che mi rendono felice sono:

1. stare con mia figlia mentre facciamo l’arte, giochiamo o semplicemente guardiamo un film insieme
2. la sensibilità ed intelligenza del mio carissimo marito
3. guardare il risultato di un progetto di cucito (o di altro tipo) e sentirmi il piacere di averlo creato
4. stare sul balcone con le mani sporche di terra mentre sistemo le mie piantine
5. essere stesa nel sole primaverile ad aria aperta (ma anche sul divano a casa nostra con il sole che entra dal balcone!) 
6. ascoltare mia figlia mentre parla, inventando racconti, canzoni e situazioni con la sua immensa creatività
7. leggere libri di tutti i generi
8. ascoltare musica di tutti i generi (e ballare di nascosta!)
9. poter parlare onestamente con gli amici di cuore
10. guardare i rifiuti di casa nostra e pensare in un modo di riutilizzarli 

so, the first 10 things that come to mind that make me happy are: 

1. being with my little girl while we do crafts, play or simply watch a movie together
2. my dear husband’s great intelligence and sensitivity
3. looking at the end product of a sewing (or other type of) project and feeling the satisfaction of having created it
4. being on my balcony with my hands dirty with potting soil while i repot and fix up my plants
5. laying down outside in the spring sun (or even on our living room couch in the sun that comes in from our balcony!)
6. listening to my darling daughter while she talks and makes up stories and situations with her amazing creativity
7. reading all types of books
8. listening to all types of music (and dancing to it when nobody’s looking!) 
9. to be able to talk openly and honestly with my closest friends
10. looking at something that i’m about to throw in the trash and thinking of a way to upcycle it
