buonissimo natale con il calendario dell’avvento al 100% recuperato - merry christmas with a 100% upcycled advent calendar

volevo scrivere del mio calendario dell’avvento qualche settimana fa, ma non ho avuto il tempo e ora è un po’ tardi, ma è sempre un’idea per l’anno prossimo!

i’ve been wanting to write about my advent calendar for the past few weeks or so, but i never had the time and now it’s a bit late, but i guess it’s always an idea for next year!

questo anno ho visto molte idee per fare calendari dell’avvento, cioè il tipo che si apre uno sportellino o qualcosa per avere un regalino ogni giorno di dicembre prima del giorno di natale. ma alla fine ho deciso di copiare il calendario 3-D che mia madre aveva per me quando ero piccola. ma in versione 100% materiali recuperati.

 this year i saw a lot of ideas for making advent calendars, that is, the type that you open up a door or something else to get a little gift each day of december before christmas. but in the end i decided to copy the 3-D calendar that my mother had for me when i was little. but with 100% upcycled materials, of course!

quindi prima ho preso la scatola di cartone più grande (e pulita) che trovavo dalla spazzatura e ho tagliato una forma di albero con 6 rami al lato. poi l’ho tracciato su un altro pezzo di cartone per averne due uguali (più o meno). poi ho fatto un taglio dall’alto fino alla metà su un pezzo e un taglio dal basso fino alla metà sull’altro. così si infilano uno nell’altro e stanno in piedi. e finalmente una stella di cartone con un taglio dal basso per infilare in cima. poi mia figlia ed io abbiamo dipinto i pezzi dell’albero verde e la stella gialla. con la tempera ancora umido, ho messo la stella in un piattino di brillantini di color oro.

so first i got the biggest (and cleanest) cardboard box i could find from the trash and cut out the shape of a tree with 6 branches per side. then i traced the shape onto another part of the cardboard to get two pieces more or less the same. then i made a slit from the top down to the middle on one and a slit from the bottom up to the middle on the other. that way they slide into each other and can stand up. and finally, a cardboard star with a slit from the bottom to slip it on top. then my little girl and i painted the tree green and the star yellow. when the star paint was still wet, i put it in a plate of gold glitter. 


quando era tutto ben asciutto abbiamo decorato l’albero con strisce e puntini di colla con i brillantini. poi ho messo i numeri da 1 a 24 sui rami. in questo modo, ogni ramo significa il giorno in cui si apre il pacchettino che si appende.

when it was completely dry, we decorated the tree with glitter glue. then i put the numbers 1 to 24 on the branches. this way each branch is the day that you open the little goodie inside.

 

e qui arriviamo ai “pacchettini.” ho pensato molto in che cosa usare. dopo un bel po’, mi è venuto in mente di usare le uova di pasqua che si usano negli stati uniti per la caccia delle uova, ma non mi sembrava per niente riciclosa l’idea. e poi ho pensato negli ovetto interni degli ovetti kinder. riscaldo un attrezzo puntato sul fornellino della cucina e faccio un foro piccolo in cima all’ovetto. ci passo un po’ di nastro o qualcosa altra per appendere e poi si diverte un sacco a abbellirlo con lustrini, nastri, pennarelli permanenti, ecc. l’unica cosa da non usare: la colla con i brillantini, che si stacca subito dalla plastica. io non compro gli ovetti kinder per la mia piccola, quindi ho dovuto chiedere agli altri di conservarli per me, perciò l’albero è ancora mezza vuoto di ovetti. ma saremmo pronti per ogni giorno dicembre prossimo!

and now for the “packages.” i thought a lot about what to use. after a while i thought of using plastic easter eggs, the ones used for easter egg hunts in the USA, but it didn’t seem particularly upcyclish. then i thought of the inner eggs in kinder eggs. i heated up the tip of an ice pick on the gas burner on the stove and burned a little hole in the top of each egg. then i put a little loop through each hole to hang them from and then the fun part of decorating them with sequins, ribbon, sharpies, etc. the one thing i learned didn’t work well was glitter glue, which wipes right off the plastic surface. i don’t buy kinder eggs for my daughter, so i had to ask all our small friends to save theirs for us to use, which is why our calendar is still half-empty. oh well, we’ll be ready next december for sure!

mercatino cancellato e mercato che non viene mai cancellato - market cancelled and market that is never cancelled

come dice mio suocero, “managgia bu ba!” questo brutto tempo ha fatto in modo che il mercatino natalizio a napoli in cui mi dovevo partecipato è stato cancellato. speriamo che si riesce a recuperare un altro giorno, anche se il tempo non promette bene.

dang it! this nasty weather has forced the christmas market in naples to be cancelled. let’s hope that the weather will cooperate to hold it another day soon, although i doubt it will.  

per fortuna esiste un mercato del artigianato che non chiude mai, neanche per i temporali più brutti. si tratta di etsy. lo già detto che ho recentemente aperto un mio negozio etsy (anche se mancano ancora parecchie cose…sappiamo com’è questo periodo pre-natalizio!) ma oggi non parliamo di me, ma invece di KATIA! katia è la blogghista di mille idee in una tazza, un blog molto carino sui craft ecologici (e altro). e katia ha anche un bel negozio etsy. mi ha contattato con la proposta di un etsy baratto. in cambio di un assorbente, mi ha mandato un paio di orecchini di vetro, un anello fatto di un bottone anni 70 e un uccellino di materiali recuperati per l’albero di natale. tutto impacchettato molto bene (e anche in un ovetto kinder, che mi servono per il mio calendario dell’avvento, di cui scriverò a presto) con un bel biglietto. secondo me, il baratto mi è andato molto bene!

fortunately there is an artisan market that never closes, not even for the worst blizzard. and that would be etsy. i recently mentioned how i opened my own etsy store (even if there are a lot of things still missing from it… we all know how hard it is to organize things at christmas time!) but today let’s not talk about me, but about KATIA! katia is the blogger behind mille idee in una tazza, a very cool blog about ecological crafts and other things. and katia also has a nice etsy store. she proposed we do an etsy exchange. in exchange for a regular cloth pad, she sent me a pair of glass earrings, a ring made from a button from the 70s and a bird for the christmas tree made out of recuperated materials. all packed up very nicely (and in an empty kinder egg, what i’m stocking up on for my advent calendar, which i’ll write about soon) with a very nice card. i say i got the better end of the deal!

mi piacciono tutti e tre le cose, ma quello che mi fa impazzire di più (e anche a la gente che lo vede) è l’anello. è semplicissimo, ma perfetto. ho già l’idea di tornare da katia dopo le feste per comprarne qualcun’altro! quindi, consiglio a tutti quanti di passare per il negozio di katia, e anche gli altri negozi etsy, e troverete tantissime idee meravigliose per regalini natalizi e non solo. grazie ancora, katia!

i like all three things, but the one i love the most (and has gotten me the most comments) is the ring. it’s so simple, but absolutely perfect. i’m already thinking about ordering some more rings from her after christmas! so, i suggest that all you out there go pop in katia’s store, as well as other etsy stores, and you’ll find all sorts of wonderful gift ideas, and not only for christmas. thanks again, katia! 

mercatino madness!! - market madness!!

…e giusto in tempo per natale. lo so che io sicuramente non ho avuto il tempo per fare quasi nessuno dei regali che volevo per i miei cari. meno male per i mercatini con artigiani che vendono i loro prodotti fatti a mano!! dunque, questo fine settimana parteciperò in ben DUE mercati:

…and just in time for christmas. i know i sure haven’t managed to make all the gifts i wanted for my near and dear ones. thank goodness for markets with artisans selling their handmade goods!! soooo, this weekend i will be participating in not one, but TWO markets:

SABATO 19 DICEMBRE a NAPOLI ci sarà il mercatino natalizio di design, trash ‘n’ jewels, un mercatino di oggetti unici fatti a mano, perfetti per regali di natale. appuntamento dalle ore 12 fino alle 23.30 a La Controra, p.tta trinità alla cesarea, 231 (traversa di via salvator rosa). si arriva anche in metropolitana, fermata salvator rosa (chi mai vuole essere fermo nel traffico degli acquisti natalizi?!) c’è anche un evento facebook e un sito con più informazioni.

SATURDAY 19 DECEMBER in NAPLES there will be design, trash ‘n’ jewels’ x-mas market, a market of unique handmade objects, perfect for christmas gifts. it will be open from 12 noon til 11:30 pm at La Controra, p.tta trinità alla cesarea, 231 (off of via salvator rosa). you can also get there with the metro (who in the world wants to get stuck in christmas shopping traffic?!). there’s a facebook event and a website with more info.  

 

DOMENICA 20 DICEMBRE al LAGO D’AVERNO in occasione della meditazione del cerchio di pace, ci sarà il mercatino ragnatela*autoproduzioni, fiera mercato delle soluzioni immaginarie…senza mercanti, al giardino dell’orco. non solo oggetti artigianali, ma anche prodotti da mangiare biologici autocertificati. appuntamento al giardino dell’orco (il lato opposto del lago dal tempio) dalle ore 12 fino al tramonto. si arriva facilmente con la cumana (fermata lucrino e poi 10 minuti a piedi), lasciate quelle machine a casa! per altre informazioni, guardate qui.

SUNDAY 20 DECEMBER at the LAGO D’AVERNO for the “circle of peace” meditation, there will be the market ragnatela*autoproduzioni, fiera mercato delle soluzioni immaginarie…senza mercanti (market of imaginary solutions…without merchants), at the giardino dell’orco. not only artisan-made objects, but also self-certified organic produce and other foods. it will be at the giardino dell’orco (the opposite side of the lake from the temple) from 12 noon until sunset. you can get here easily with the cumana train (get out at lucrino then walk 10 minutes), leave those cars at home! for more information, look here.

navigazione internet ecologica - ecological surfing

non avevo mai pensato all’inquinamento dell’usare l’internet o i motori di ricerca. poi ho visto un link da un mio amico su facebook su ecosia. su questo motore di ricerca, ogni ricerca effettuata salva circa 2 metri quadri di foresta pluviale. come funziona? ve lo faccio dire dal loro sito:

i’d never thought about polluting with internet or search engines. then i saw one of my facebook friends had posted a link to ecosia. every search made on this search engine saves about 2 square meters of rainforest. how does it work? i’ll let them tell you about it directly: 

Il nostro guadagno proviene dai clic sui link sponsorizzati che sono visualizzati accanto ai risultati di ricerca. Ciascun clic su uno di questi link ci permette di guadagnare alcuni centesimi. Circa il due percento delle richieste di ricerca termina con un clic sul link sponsorizzato.
In media, guadagniamo attualmente 0,13 centesimi a ricerca.
Doniamo almeno l'80 del ricavato al progetto di protezione della foresta pluviale gestito dal WWF. Questo progetto è localizzato nel Juruena National Park in Amazzonia. c’è un video che spiega con molta chiarezza come funziona. si può semplicemente usare come motore di ricerca normale o installare un componente per firefox che ti permette di vedere non solo quanti metri quadri hai salvato tu, ma anche quanti sono stati salvati da tutti quanti. io l’ho messo subito, fatelo anche voi!

there’s a video that explains how it works very clearly. you can use it as a regular search engine or install the firefox add-on which lets you see not only how many square meters you’ve saved , but also how many have been saved by everyone. i installed it right away, you should too! 

calze di natale - christmas stockings

una delle cose belle di avere due culture in casa è che si festeggia di più. non solo ci sono delle feste diverse da festeggiare in più, ma si festeggiano quelle in comune in modi diversi. ad esempio il periodo natalizio. negli USA, i bimbi lasciano un bicchiere di latte e un piattino di biscotti la vigilia di natale e appendono la calza sopra il camino. così, babbo natale scende giù il camino, riempie le calze, lascia i pacchetti sotto l’albero e si riposa un attimo con i biscotti ed il latte (io trovavo sempre strano che babbo natale trovava anche del tempo per mettere le cose sporche in lavastoviglie). poi risale il camino e va alla prossima casa.

one of the nice things about having two cultures in one house is that you celebrate a lot more often. not only are there different holidays to celebrate, but the ones in common are often celebrated in different ways. for example, christmas. in the USA, kids leave a glass of milk and a plate of cookies out on christmas eve and hang a stocking on the fireplace. that way santa claus can come down the chimney, fill up the stockings, leave gifts under the tree and rest a moment with the milk and cookies (i always wondered, though, how santa had enough time to put the dirty dishes in the dishwasher, too). then back up the chimney and on to the next house.  

ma l’idea di babbo natale è arrivata da poco qui in italia (non c’era quando mio marito era piccolo) e si comporta in modo diverso. non lascia niente nelle calza, infatti i bimbi non lasciano le calze per lui, ma per la befana un paio di settimane dopo a epifania (negli stati uniti la befana non esiste). a volte è un po’ complicato spiegare queste differenze a mia figlia senza rovinare la magia di questi personaggi. ma alla fine è solo contenta di avere la sua calza riempieta ben due volte ogni anno. beati loro, i bimbi che festeggiano le tradizioni di due culture!

but the idea of santa claus started up pretty recently here in italy (there wasn’t any santa when my husband was little) and he does different things here. he doesn’t fill up any stockings, so kids don’t leave them out for him. however the “befana,” an old witch, fills up stockings the eve of epiphany a couple of weeks after christmas (the befana doesn’t exist in the US). it’s sometimes a bit complicated to try to explain these differences to my daughter without ruining the season’s magic. but in the end, she’s just happy to have her stocking filled up two times every year instead of just one. lucky kids who get to celebrate the traditions of two different cultures!

veniamo al dunque. molto spesso negli stati uniti, i bambini hanno delle calze molto speciali per loro. i bimbi della mia generazione nella mia famiglia avevano delle calze fatte da mia zia, tutte simili ma con disegni diversi. le ha fatte con il feltro addobbato con nastri, lustrini, campanellini, ecc. abbiamo sempre amato le nostre calze speciali. (la mia è nella foto sopra)
  

let me get to the point. very often in the united states, kids have special christmas stockings. the kids of my generation in my family had stockings that my aunt made for us, all of them similar but with different pictures. she made them out of felt and decorated with ribbons, sequins, lace, bells, etc. we always loved our special stockings. (mine is in the photo above)

purtroppo mia zia è morta di cancro quando studiavo ancora all’università e quindi quando è nata mia figlia ho deciso di continuare la sua tradizione di fare le calze per la generazione nuova. ma modernizzando un po’; invece del feltro, ho usato il pile.


unfortunately, my aunt died of cancer when i was at university and so when my daughter was born, i decided to continue the tradition for our family’s new generation. but modernizing them a little. instead of felt, i used fleece.

i miei fratelli e cugini erano molto felici e commossi di vedere le nuove calze nello stile di mia zia e i bimbi, non avendo mai conosciuta la zia, comunque apprezzavano i colori e disegni fatti apposto per loro. e, da quello che mi raccontano, i bimbi si emozionano ancora ogni anno che si portano fuori.

my brother and sister and cousins were really happy and touched to see the new stockings like the ones my aunt had made and the kids, never having met my aunt, really liked the colors and pictures made just for them. and, from what they tell me, the kids still get excited every year when it’s time to take out the stockings again.

  

ho messo un bel po’ di tempo per farle, ma sono molto contenta dei risultati. confesso che i disegni ho copiato dall’internet. cercavo certi dipi di disegni in google images e li visualizzavo sul computer, ingrandendo fino ad avere la grandezza giusta per la calza. poi ho preso la carta usata dello stampante, l’ho messa sul monitor e ricalcavo le immagini. poi le tagliavo e usavo per tracciare le forme sul pile. ho fatto un’altra modifica. le calze di mia zia hanno le asole di feltro che, col tempo e il peso, si sono rovinate. quindi ho rinforzato le mie asole di pile con i nastri cuciti sopra.


it took me a while to make them, but i’m happy with the way they turned out. i admit that i copied the pictures from the internet. i looked for specific types of designs in google images and enlarged them on the computer to get them to the right size for the stockings. then i traced the images onto used printer paper from the monitor, cut out each part and traced the shapes onto the fleece. i also changed the loops to hang them. the ones my aunt made were out of felt, like the rest of the stockings, and with time and the weight inside the stockings, they came apart. so i reinforced my fleece loops with ribbon sewn to them.

 

qui la calza che ho fatto per mia figlia, che non sembra tanto complicato ma invece è stata quella per cui ho impegnato più tempo. i fiocchi di neve erano piuttosto difficili da tagliare dal pile.

here’s the stocking i made for my little girl. it doesn’t look particularly complicated, but it was the one that took me the most time in the end. it was pretty tough to cut those snowflakes out.

e finalmente, non potevo lasciare mio povero marito senza calza, quindi l’ho fatto anche per lui.
l’anno prossimo dovrò rimettermi all’opera per la bimba di mio cugino che nascerà e spero di ripoterlo fare prima o poi anche per un’eventuale nuovo arrivato a casa mia. tenete le dita incrociate!

and finally, i couldn’t leave my poor dear husband without a stocking, so i made one for him too.

next year i’ll be back to stocking making for my cousin’s expected arrival and i hope to be able to make another one for an arrival in my house, too. keep your fingers crossed!

etsy e mercato - etsy and market

fra pochi giorni ci sarà il mercatino mensile “ragnatela” in cui partecipo dal mese scorso. la “fiera mercato delle soluzioni immaginarie” propone prodotti biologici ed artigianali locali. venite domenica il 6 dicembre dalle 10 fino al tramonto a fiume di pietra sul vesuvio (un posto bellissimo, si sale la strada per vesuvio da ercolano, l’ingresso è di fronte l’ingresso all’osservatorio). alle ore 18 ci sarà la proiezione del docu-film "l’aeroporto fantasma" con la partecipazione del regista giuseppe ferrara. ci sarò io con il mio banchetto. venite a trovarmi!

in a few days will be the monthly market “ragnatela” which i started participating in last month. the “market of imaginary solutions” sells organic and artisan-made local products. come on sunday december 6 from 10 am til sunset at fiume di pietra on mount vesuvius (a gorgeous place, take the road to vesuvius from herculaneum, the entrance is across the street from the entrance to the observatory). at 6 pm the documentary film "l’aeroporto fantasma" will be screened with the participation of the director giuseppe ferrara. i’ll be there with my stand. come say hi!  

in più, ho aperto da poco un nuovo negozio online su etsy. diverso dal mio negozio online di cloth pad shop,* metterò in vendita tutti i miei prodotti, quindi i prodotti igienci lavabili ma anche altre cose che faccio. non sono ancora riuscita a mettere tutto (sono incredibilmente piena di cose da fare), ma pian piano ci metto tutto. essendo un sito statunitense, i prezzi sono in dollari americani, quindi sembrano un po’ alti, ma in verità sono i soliti prezzi in euro cambiato con la conversione ufficiale. venite a vedere!

what’s more, i recently opened a new online store at etsy. unlike my online store at cloth pad shop*, i’ll be selling all of my products, so my cloth sanitary items but also other things that I make. i still haven’t been able to list everything (i’ve been incredibly busy), but bit by bit i’ll get everything on there! as it is a site based in the USA, the prices are in US dollars, so they seem high compared to my euro prices, but they’re really the same with the official currency conversion. come take a look!  

per chi non conosce etsy (non è ancora molto diffuso in italia), è una specie di ebay, ma con i prezzi fissi e tutti gli oggetti in vendita sono fatti a mano da chi vende. ci sono delle cose bellissime in vendita su etsy, è piuttosto pericoloso guardare che c’è in vendita perché ti viene voglia di comprare tutto!

for those who don’t know etsy (it still isn’t very well-known in italy), it’s a sort of ebay, but with set prices and all the items are hand made by the sellers. there are some amazing things sold on etsy, so it can get pretty dangerous to go browsing because you want to buy everything you see!
