presine fai da te - make your own potholders

 
Questa settimana è stata piuttosto impossibile fare niente di divertente né bloggare grazie all'influenza e tanto lavoro. Stamattina invece ho portata mia figlia a scuola e mi sono messa all'opera.

This week it was pretty much impossible for me to do anything fun or blog thanks to the flu and lots of work. This morning, though, I brought my daughter to school and I got off to "work."

Lo stato delle nostre presine era veramente pietoso, tranne un guanto e altre presine grandi. Ma quelle piccole a forma di cono sono davvero comode e erano mesi che volevo farle nuove. Non so cosa aspettavo, sono facili e veloci da cucire e, usando tutti materiali da vestiti vecchi, non ho pagato un centesimo!

Our potholders were in pretty pitiful shape, except for a gloved one and some bigger ones. But those little cone-shaped ones which I've only found here in Italy are just so convenient and I'd been wanting to make new ones for months. Who knows what I was waiting for. They're super easy and fast to sew up and, using material from some old clothes, I didn't pay a cent for them!

Per fare una presina, prima ho tagliato un cerchio di diametro 11-12 cm (revisione: mi sono appena accorta che 11-12 cm è il RAGGIO, quindi il diametro sarebbe 22-24 cm) da un mio vecchio pantalone di pigiama di cotone (ad aragoste) e 2 cerchi dalla stessa misura da una giacca di lino (nero) consumato di mio marito. Poi ho tagliato tutti i cerchi a metà (o si possono già tagliare come semicerchi se riesci così ad usare meglio la stoffa che hai a disposizione). Prendi 11-12 cm di nastro carino, piegalo a metà e spilla per fermarlo. Io ho usato un nastro a spina di pesce (scusate, non so se così si traduce l'inglese "twill tape") ricavato da un pacco regalo.

To make one of these potholders, I cut an 11-12 cm diameter circle (revision: I just realized that it's actually an 11-12 cm RADIUS, so 22-24 cm diameter) from an old pair of cotton (with lobsters) pyjama bottoms and two more of the same size circles from a worn-through black linen jacket of my husband's. I then cut all the circles in half (or you can already cut them out from the fabric as semicircles if it helps you fit them in). Cut 11-12 cm of pretty ribbon, fold it in half and pin it to keep it folded. I actually used a piece of twill tape that came from some nicely wrapped gift.

Allora, metti prima 2 semicerchi di lino, uno di cotone con la parte stampata in su, l'altro di cotone con la parte stampata in giù, e gli altri 2 di lino. Li spilli lungo la parte curva. Poi, si piega a metà e segni quel punto con uno spillo. Il nastro si deve mettere a fianco a questo spillo (quindi non perfettamente centrato) con la parte piegata dentro tra i due semicerchi di cotone, lasciando le estremità che spuntano fuori, e si spilla per non farlo muovere.

So, first place down the two linen semicircles, one cotton one with the right side up, the other cotton right side down, and the other two linen ones. Pin them along the curved edge. Then fold it in half and mark the half-way point with a pin. You need to put the ribbon next to this pin (so it will not be perfectly centered) with the folded part inside between the two cotton semicircles, leaving the ends sticking out the top. When you have it positioned nicely, pin it to keep it there.

Poi si cuce, lasciando un quarto della parte superiore aperto. Togli tutti gli spilli e taglia intorno al cucito. Infila le dita dentro per togliere lo spillo dal nastro.

Then you sew it, leaving a quarte of the top straight side open. Take out all the pins, trim the edges and stick your finger inside to take the pin out of the ribbon.

Gira il tutto nello verso giusto, tirando l'angolo opposto da dentro il buco lasciato nella cucitura. Piega i bordi del buco verso l'interno e fissarli con degli spilli.

Turn it the right way out by pulling the opposite corner through the hole left in the stitching. Fold the open edges inwards and pin them shut.

Decidi quale lato del cotone ti piace di più e vorresti all'esterno. Piega a metà con i lato che vorresti all'esterno all'interno, tirando il nastro dentro. Se vuoi usare la macchina per cucire, metti un ago per stoffe pesanti, o cucire a mano (ho spezzato un ago della macchina in questa parte!). Allinea le punte per bene e cuci una linea per unire i due bordi diritti (NON la parte curva). Poi gira nel verso giusto, ed ecco la tua presina! E' bellissima e l'hai forse anche ricavata da stoffe che erano altrimenti da buttare! Che bella sensazione!

Decide which side of the cotton you like the most and would like on the outside. Fold it in half with the good side inside, pulling the ribbon in. If you want to use a sewing machine, be sure to use a needle for heavy fabrics, or just do it by hand (I broke a machine needle at this step!). Line up the edges and straight stitch the two straight edges together (NOT the curved edges). Then turn it the right way out and just look at your awesome potholder! It looks so good and you might have even made it recycling clothes that you would've just tossed out otherwise! Now doesn't that feel good?!
